RGHS Weekly Bulletin 14 June 2019

I am sure that all staff and learners are looking forward to a well-earned break over this mid-year holiday. Over the past week we had an excellent Careers Expo, organised by Ms Norval and her Life Orientation Department, and the bonding experiences of the Riff Off and Inter-house sports. It is disappointing that so many learners decided not to be a part of this by not attending school and have missed the learning opportunities of going through their recent examination papers and the new work that has been covered these past two weeks.

Please allow me the chance to mention some of the events that happened over the past term that I have not yet had a chance to comment on.

On Friday 10 May our Muslim Students’ Association, under the leadership of Ms Rabeh, hosted their annual Iftaar. Five local schools were invited, as were members of staff. The programme consisted of two Islamic groups who performed nasheeds (religious prayers) before breaking fast. Vision Child and Youth Care Centre, an orphanage in Mountview, joined our girls for the event. This was a lovely evening with good company, good food and spiritual significance.

On 30 May, our Jazz Band took part in the annual Big Band Jazz Festival at the Baxter Theatre and, as always, did us proud. Congratulations to our girls and their teacher, Mr Buitendag.

On Friday 7 June, Rustenburg’s Jabulani girls invited local schools to join them at the annual Jabulani Culture Evening. Our girls organised an outstanding event and put on some well-polished and entertaining items. Well done to the Jabulani society and their teacher-in-charge, Ms Mase.

Since 13 May the school has been focussed on examinations, however, sport continued throughout the examination period and the Drama Department has been preparing for the annual production in collaboration with Rondebosch Boys’ High School. “12 Angry Jurors” will take place at Rondebosch Boys’ High School from 31 July to 03 August.

On Saturday, our Chamber Choir performed at the kykNET “Sing in Harmonie” competition and made it through to the finals. We congratulate them on this fine achievement.

On Tuesday ten water polo players departed for Serbia with Ms Goble and yesterday sixteen learners departed on the World Challenge trip to Delhi, India with Ms Viljoen and Ms Thompson. On 26 June, some of our music learners will travel to the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown. We wish them a safe trip and look forward to hearing about their travels on their return.

It has been a term of so many diverse activities and events and we look forward to next term and the adventures it brings. We especially look forward to the combined choral performance of Karl Jenkins’s “The Armed Man” on 23 and 24 July, for which I hope you have booked your ticket. It promises to be an event not to be missed. Please encourage your daughters to support their friends who are performing and to attend one of the evening shows.

Congratulations to Mr Edward Mudiwa and his wife Tabhita Zvokuombas, on the birth of their son, Darryl. Congratulations to Mr Tawande Muyambo and and his wife Precious Madyausiku, on the birth of their son, James. We wish Mr Bernard Bierman and his wife Jess all the best as they await the birth of their daughter over this coming holiday.
