Dear RGHS Families

Finally we have all the girls back at school and, although we have only three grades on campus at one time, things are certainly looking up.  Feelings of apprehension are starting to wane and everybody is settling in.

We have noticed that in true Rustenburg spirit, generosity reigns supreme and, although it is normally something considered admirable, sharing water bottles and food from one container is not good practice during these times.  It is hard, I know, but please reinforce the message to your daughter that she needs to stay safe, especially with a new positive test for COVID-19 being reported today.  Sharing utensils and water bottles is not safe.

Last week the staff attended a two-day course run by L&N Advisors’ Social Justice Consultant, Lovelyn Nwadeyi and her co-presenter, Nolwazi Tusini.  The Management Team attended on Monday and Tuesday and then they oversaw the running of the school while the rest of the teachers and administrative staff attended on Wednesday and Thursday.  These were useful sessions; although they were challenging at times, without discomfort we cannot grow. We are committed to changing the wrongs of the past and I look forward to seeing us going from strength to strength as we become a place where all belong.

Rustenburg supports the campaign against gender-based violence.  On Tuesday the Grade 11 girls held a vigil at break honouring the memory of 19-year-old Uyinene Nrwetyana who was raped and murdered at the Clareinch post office a year ago.  The organisers took flowers from Rustenburg to the site.  We are proud of our girls for making a stand.  It is a scourge that cannot be ignored.

Last Friday we bade farewell to Ms Melanie Howe, our Finance Manager who joined us in October 2019, and we wish her well in her new venture.  She will continue in a contractual position assisting with our budgeting and management account until such time as we find her replacement.

On Monday, we say goodbye to Ms Marieta Langenhoven who joined the staff of Rustenburg nine years ago as one of our Afrikaans educators.  We thank her for bringing her special brand of kindness, generosity and lovely sense of humour to the classroom.  She will long be remembered as a good teacher and supportive colleague.  The staffroom will not be the same without her and her “gasvryheid”.  We wish Ms Langenhoven a long and happy retirement.

Having moved to Level 2 restrictions, I am optimistic that we are over the worst and ask everybody to hang in there with regard to wearing a mask, sanitising and social distancing.  It is important that we do not let our guard down and become complacent.  Now more than ever we need to ensure that we maintain safety measures for the benefit of ourselves and those around us.

All COVID-19 related information can be found in the Google Drive folder here.

The Bugs' Boutique will be open on Saturday 5 September from 10:00 to 12:00.

The shop will return to normal operation hours from October in preparation for the return to uniform from Term 4.
Please ensure that when your daughter leaves home in the morning that she is using her Rustenburg school bag and that her hair is tied up.
We will conduct a fire drill at the end of the school day on Monday 31 August – the learners will evacuate to the Hockey Fields and will be dismissed from there.

There will therefore be no assembly at the end of the day. While we hope that the drill will be complete by 14:30, we may need to keep them for a few moments longer to complete the drill register.
