RGHS Weekly Bulletin 15 October 2020

Dear RGHS families,

Walking into the shops recently, I was shocked to see that the shelves are already stocked with Christmas gifts.  For me, that bodes the end of another year. This year has been so full of ups and downs that it is hard to imagine something as ordinary as the end of another year approaching.

In a week’s time we will break for the end of term and what a term it has been.  While the Grades 8 to 11 learners are busy with assessments, the matrics are currently writing their preliminary examinations and, on Monday, they will write their Final NSC Life Orientation examination.  The rest of the week is dedicated to the final NSC Art and Design pracs, the receiving of prelim papers, revision and ends with the IEB AP Maths exams on Friday 23 October.

Next Friday, the Matrics will mark the end of twelve years at school with their Valedictory Service in the Kemp Hall quad. My staff and I, the matric parents and other learners are acutely aware of the sense of injustice and loss suffered by the current matrics, as they have not enjoyed certain expected rites of passage. The world has changed and “stolen” the traditions and customs most have come to expect.

Please continue to be considerate of each other at this time - keep masks on, hands washed or sanitized and keep your distance. It is fair to say a great many things have changed.  If we use these times wisely and adapt, it could be a good opportunity to make some new traditions.

Michael Gates
