General Notices

  • The SGB elections are nearly upon us and I appeal to each family to take the time to vote on 19 March at 17:30 for 18:00, so that we have a quorum. Nomination forms are available from the office.
  • Tuckshop Pre-Order Form for Term 2: Please download and return to school by Friday 16 March.
  • Falling Pine cones: We are coming into the season where the pine cones are ripening and are easily dislodged by squirrels in their search for nuts – these green pine cones are quite heavy and cause damage when falling from the tall trees. We make regular inspections of the trees on Campus and dislodge loose cones where we are able to, but cannot take responsibility for every single pine cone. Please take due care when entering/parking on campus.
  • All parents have been sent an email inviting them to the new Parent Portal. If you did not receive this email or have problems connecting, please email info@rghs.org.za. From this term, reports will be posted on the portal and will not be printed.

News

On Friday, 9 March Rustenburg’s Blu Jazz Band took part in the finals of the V&A Waterfront Band Slam competition. They competed against Bishops and Settlers in the final and were true ambassadors for the school. They managed to get the crowd on their feet with songs from Freshlyground and Amy Winehouse. The support from the school was overwhelming and Blu Jazz managed to win the Spirit Cup. Even though they didn’t win the overall competition they made the school very proud. What is more extraordinary is that the girls worked out the whole programme by themselves. Well done girls!

Christine Martin in C6 and three other girls entered three dances in the Western Province Trials for Performing Arts in February and made it through to the finals.  The girls choreographed their own dances and Christine designed the costumes. The group has been invited to perform at the South African Championships in Rustenburg, North West Province during the school holidays. If they make the South African team, she will go to the World Championships in L.A.  We wish Christine and her team great success.
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Traditionally, at Rustenburg, this auspicious day is celebrated with various round foods and the singing of the Pi Song. Photo by Lauren Gericke
