Full LHIC Meeting on Monday, March 10
A reminder that our next full LHIC meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 10, 10 a.m. to noon, at the Ascend One Building, 8930 Stanford Blvd., Columbia. This meeting will be in the Potomac Room, which is accessed from the back of the building. Watch your email for more detailed instructions.
LHIC Member Survey
Many thanks to all who completed the survey! We had a total of 42 respondents. Maryland Nonprofits will be analyzing the data and we will discuss the results during our March 10 meeting.
If you haven't already RSVP'd for our LHIC retreat on Thursday, April 3 from 9-5, please do so by Friday March 14. The retreat will be held at the Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring, Columbia. Lunch and snacks will be served. More details to follow.

Maryland Health Exchange Updates
Connection Update, Friday, February 28, 2014
Open enrollment continues through March 31, 2014, so Marylanders who have not enrolled yet can still do so.

- 35,636 Marylanders have chosen to enroll in private health plans through Maryland Health Connection;
- 170,390 Marylanders have created identity-verified accounts;
- 19,068 Marylanders who who have chosen plans through Maryland Health Connection have paid the first premium for their policies;
- 95,889 Marylanders signed up through the Primary Adult Care (PAC) program were automatically converted to Medicaid coverage effective January 1, 2014.
Do you need ACA enrollment materials? Healthy Howard's Patricia Omana, the regional outreach manager, has free enrollment materials available for anyone who needs them. These include posters, flyers and brochures. She is also available to do outreach, meetings and trainings on enrollment and the Affordable Care Act. You can contact Patricia at firstname.lastname@example.org or 410-313-5170. She is anxious to partner with anyone who may need assistance. See detailed information from the Door below.
She writes: "People who need health coverage can come to the Door to HealthCare for help. Our hours of operation are: Monday-Tuesday-Friday 8:30AM to 5:00PM; Wednesday-Thursday 8:30AM to 6:00PM and Saturday the 8th and 15th of March from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. We can go to your location, give a presentation and enroll your staff."

Study Finds 43% Drop in Obesity Rate for Preschoolers
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the obesity rate among 2- to 5-year-olds dropped from 14 percent in 2004 to eight percent in 2012. Although this age group makes up only a small portion of the population, they are, perhaps, the most significant age group, as eating and exercise habits formed early are often harder to change later. Telemedicine Increases Access to Behavioral Health Services in Maryland
To treat patients with behavioral health care needs in underserved areas of Maryland and Washington, D.C., Catholic Charities plans to increase access to services in Allegany County through telemedicine technology. With a $53,479 grant from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Eckhart Alternative School will be able to remedy mental health needs with the help of Catholic Charities Mountain Maryland Behavioral Health Clinic. This collaboration helps children affected by emotional and behavioral challenges and other mental health issues access resources necessary to improve health. Click here to learn more.

Maryland Health Connection Enrollment Fairs
Maryland Health Connection is sponsoring a series of enrollment fairs around the state. With the assistance of certified representatives, individuals attending the events will be able to apply for and enroll in Medicaid or qualified health plans. Latino Health Fair
March 15, noon-4:00 p.m.
Join us for a free health fair at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center - free health screenings and health information for the Spanish-speaking population in Howard County and adjacent areas. Free health screenings include: blood pressure, colorectal cancer, glucose, cholesterol, children’s dental exam, HIV/AIDS, vision and hearing.
