Dear LHIC Members,
As you know, the Howard County Health Officer, Dr. Maura Rossman, has decided to stop contracting with Healthy Howard to staff the Local Health Improvement Coalition. The LHIC will now be run in the Health Department's Bureau of Health Promotion, under Dr. Elizabeth Menachery. Dr. Menachery is in the process of hiring a new LHIC Director and Program Manager, as well as two additional support staff. Funding for the positions in Healthy Howard ends on June 30, so there will be a short gap in staffing while these positions are filled. I am working hard to ensure a smooth transition, but it is likely that a few things will fall through the cracks - thanks for your patience with this process.

With these changes, and with the Community Care Team moving to the hospital, my position at Healthy Howard is ending, so this will be my last LHIC Digest. On July 5, I will begin my new position as the Executive Director of a newly incorporated nonprofit, Consumer Health First (formerly the Maryland Women's Coalition for Health Care Reform), a policy and advocacy group dedicated to ensuring access, quality, and equity in health care reform. I hope to continue working with many of you in my new role!

I have very much enjoyed working with all of you, and I'm pleased with the progress the LHIC has made over the last 2 1/2 years. I know that you will continue to do great things for Howard County.

Best of luck to all of you!

Thanks to Departing Co-Chairs!
Many thanks to Liz Clark and Liddy Garcia-Bunuel who have served as co-chairs of Healthy Weight and Access to Care, respectively. Both will be leaving Healthy Howard at the end of June. They have made tremendous contributions to the work of their groups and will be greatly missed.

Thanks also to Donna Wells, Behavioral Health co-chair, who is retiring from her position as the Executive Director of the Howard County Mental Health Authority. The LHIC will miss her leadership and wishes her the best in retirement!

Message from Dr. Menachery
The July 28 Full LHIC meeting will be cancelled to allow for a summer holiday. If workgroups choose to meet, please do so.

In August, Dr. Elizabeth Menachery and the new LHIC staff would like to meet with each LHIC Workgroup at your regularly scheduled meeting time. Please share your workgroup meeting time and location: or 410-313-7226.

Also, the Digest will become a monthly publication during the transition phase.

Please contact Elizabeth as needed during the summer holiday. Have a nice and safe summer!

Report on Network Adequacy in Maryland

The Maryland Women's Coalition for Health Care Reform (now Consumer Health First) conducted a study on the accuracy of provider directories and the availability of appointments for women seeking OB/GYN care. The study found that more than one-third of providers listed in the directories were unavailable because the contact information was incorrect, the provider was no longer in practice, or the specialty listed was incorrect. You can view the full report, Network Adequacy in Maryland: A Report on Provider Directories and Women's Access to Health Care Services, by clicking on the link below.
