LHIC News and Updates


Hello LHIC members!

This week we welcome our new LHIC Program Manager, Jeananne Sciabarra. Jeananne is a long-time Howard County resident and has been an active volunteer with several local organizations. She comes to the LHIC from a human services nonprofit in Hyattsville, where she was the Quality Improvement/Accreditation Manager. LHIC Member Survey
We are asking all LHIC members to please complete a survey to help us in our strategic planning process. The survey should take about 10-15 minutes and can be accessed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LHICMemberSurvey. We ask that you please complete the survey by Tuesday, March 4, so that we can review the results at the March 10 LHIC meeting. LHIC Retreat
As a reminder, our LHIC retreat will be held at the Hawthorn Center, located at 6175 Sunny Spring, Columbia, MD 21044, on Thursday, April 3 from 9-5.  Lunch and snacks will be served. More details to follow.

Maryland Health Exchange Updates

Connection Update, Friday, February 21, 2014

  • Enrollments in qualified health plans increased to a total of 33,251 individuals; 
  • 163,856 Marylanders have created identity-verified accounts;
  • 95,889 Marylanders signed up through the Primary Adult Care (PAC) program were automatically converted to Medicaid coverage effective January 1, 2014.
Open enrollment continues through March 31, 2014, so Marylanders that have not enrolled yet can still do so.

Do you need ACA enrollment materials? Healthy Howard's Patricia Omana, the regional outreach manager, has free enrollment materials available for anyone who needs them. These include posters, flyers and brochures. She is also available to do outreach, meetings and trainings on enrollment and the Affordable Care Act.  You can contact Patricia at pomana@healthyhowardmd.org or 410-313-5170. She is anxious to partner with anyone who may need assistance. See detailed information from the Door below.
 
She writes: "People who need health coverage can come to the Door to HealthCare for help. Our hours of operation are: Monday-Tuesday-Friday 8:30AM to 5:00PM; Wednesday-Thursday 8:30AM to 6:00PM and Saturday the 8th and 15th of March from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. We can go to your location, give a presentation and enroll your staff."

This week marks the fourth anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative, a campaign to improve the health of the nation's children. Behavioral Health
Technology Helps Bridge Gap in Michigan's Mental Health Care
A study by the University of Michigan Center for Healthcare Research found that 20 percent of Michigan residents reported being diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives, compared to 18 percent nationwide. Michigan also has a shortage of outpatient mental health services and inpatient psychiatric beds. To address this gap in services, pediatricians and primary care providers are turning to phone and teleconferencing to connect with psychiatrists who can provide guidance and, if needed, evaluate patients. Latino Health Fair

Join us for a free health fair at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center - free health screenings and health information for the Spanish-speaking population in Howard County and adjacent areas. Free health screenings include: blood pressure, colorectal cancer, glucose, cholesterol, children’s dental exam, HIV/Aids, vision and hearing.

HC DrugFree Call for PSAs
Deadline: March 3
DrugFree is looking for teens to create Public Service Announcements (PSAs) that focus on preventing prescription & over-the-counter drug misuse and abuse in youth ages 12 to 25 for the HoCo FilmFest. Submission deadline is March 3, 2014.

Weighing in on Your Child's Weight
