Upcoming LHIC Forum 
Please mark your calendars and join us on Thursday, March 24 from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Howard County Miller Library for our 1st LHIC Community Forum. The purpose of the Forum is to share with community members the work that the LHIC is doing to improve health outcomes in the County. This will also be an opportunity for LHIC organizations to showcase their programs.

Sugars in Western Diets Increase Risk for Breast Cancer Tumors and Metastasis

As reported by Science Daily, the high amounts of dietary sugar in the typical Western diet may increase the risk of breast cancer and metastasis to the lungs, according to a study at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The findings, published in the Jan. 1, 2016 online issue of Cancer Research, demonstrated dietary sugar's effect on an enzymatic signaling pathway known as 12-LOX (12-lipoxygenase).

2016 Health Law Exchange Enrollment Tops 11.3M

According to Kaiser Health News, more than 11.3 million people have enrolled in private health insurance for 2016 under the Affordable Care Act, surpassing last year’s mark and the 10.5 million goal that the Obama administration set for the year, federal officials said last week.

Open enrollment began Nov. 1 and ends Jan. 31.

Creating An Age-Friendly Community Report 

Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman has announced new initiatives to support the future growth of Howard County’s older adult population, including the release of “Creating An Age-Friendly Community,” a 20-year plan to accommodate the projected 183 percent increase in the number of adults age 65 or older living in the County by 2040.

HC DrugFree
Teens Ask and Experts Answer on January 26 
HC DrugFree is proud to partner with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to encourage Howard County teens to submit their drug or alcohol questions as part of NIDA’s 2016 Drugs and Alcohol Chat Day. NIDA’s expert scientists will be available to answer teens’ questions on Tuesday, January 26 between 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. All Howard County teens may login at and use Howard County’s access code f2f58. This access code number will be required for each student to log into the chat, create a user name, and submit questions to NIDA’s panel of experts. HC DrugFree Teen Advisory Council Meetings 
HC DrugFree’s Teen Advisory Council (TAC) meets one Monday evening a month from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at The Barn (Oakland Mills Village Center) and is open to all Howard County high school students. The next TAC meetings will be held on Monday, February 22. Community service hours are available. HC DrugFree Category in the annual HoCo FilmFest
HC DrugFree is looking for film-savvy teens to enter the HC DrugFree Category in the 2016 HoCo FilmFest. The winning film will be used as a public service announcement throughout Howard County. Entries must focus on prescription pain medication (opioids) misuse, which often leads to heroin use. Please visit HC DrugFree's Events Page for more information and to view the 2015 winning film.
