What's Happening

We have a number of really fun events happening in May! Check it out below, learn more about SAR and help our Team meet our goals.

Cameco skate partySSAR provided first aid services at the Cameco Skate Party on February 16 at the Meewasin Skating Rink to celebrate Family Day. Thanks to Shawn Bursey, Jaime Storch, Jarrett Erker and Tracy VanBrabant for assisting at the function. Fortunately only a couple bandaids were required!

The training evening in February was spent developing note taking skills. Instruction by Shelley Ballard-McKinlay discussed the importance of accurate note taking and provided SSAR members with an opportunity to develop and practice those skills. Sean Taylor also shared the process the Saskatoon Police Services goes through when someone is reported missing before requesting assistance. Thanks to both members for sharing their knowledge with the team.

The AdventureSmart program is part of Preventative Search and Rescue activities. Sherry Buller provided a Hug-a-Tree and Survive presentation for a group of Beavers in early February. The Beavers were taught how not to become lost and what to do if they become lost. This program is provided free of charge. If you would like a presentation for a group of children, please email us.

Reminder: we are now on Instagram! Follow us from the link noted above.

Prospective Members'

On April 1 at 7 pm a prospective members' meeting will be held at the Fire Training Centre, 116 Ave W S. If you or anyone you know is interested in learning more about Saskatoon Search and Rescue and becoming involved in our Chapter, please contact Membership Director Jarod Harvey and plan to attend this meeting.

& Public Education Events

May is going to be a busy month! We're getting so close to having enough funds to complete our Emergency Communications Project and we want to get it done! And hopefully raise a bit of extra money for other important equipment and training. To this end, we have a month-long campaign and a couple other events to raise money and awareness.

We're also super excited that as of March 1 we have charitable status! It's been a long haul and a lot of work but will be well worth it in the long run and only make our organization more sustainable in the future.

31 Days of SSAR

31 Days of SSAR is a crowd-funding campaign that will be held during the month of May and, each day, feature short videos, articles and other items of interest related to search, rescue and public safety. We are hoping to have a matching donor sponsor on board as well. If you know of a company or organization that might be interested in this, please let us know!
The campaign has three purposes:
  1. To educate the public about search and rescue in Saskatchewan and Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) topics;
  2. To raise awareness of National Emergency Preparedness Week and Provincial Missing Persons Week, May 3-9, 2015; and
  3. To raise the funds required to complete our Emergency Communications Project, provide funds for further training opportunities for our members and to purchase additional equipment needs.
More details as to how this works will be forthcoming as we get further into the planning.

Gear Swap/Consignment and Garage Sale

In conjunction with the annual Montgomery Garage Sale on Saturday, May 2, we will be hosting a sale with the main focus being on SAR and outdoor-related gear but any household or other garage sale type items are welcome! Items can either be put in the sale with all proceeds going to SSAR or more valuable items can be put in the sale on consignment, with SSAR taking a percentage of the sale price. Details will come soon but, for now, start your spring cleaning! You don't have to be a SSAR member to contribute.

Barbecue and PSAR Display

On Sunday, May 3  we will have a Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) display and barbecue at Cabela's. This event will be the main kick-off to the 31 Days of SSAR campaign and also promote our involvement in National Emergency Preparedness Week and Provincial Missing Persons Week. Join us for lunch from 11 am - 2 pm and take in the displays. There will be child appropriate fun and games so bring the whole family!
