What's Happening

At SSAR

On April 10, Scott Wright (SSAR member, SARSAV Past President, SARVAC Vice President) will be receiving the Shield Award from the Saskatoon Fire Department at this year's Badge, Shield and Star Dinner. Tickets are available at via Picatic and a full report will follow after the event.

It's great that so many people are interested in learning more about SSAR. See information below about our next Prospective Members' Meeting on April 14 and encourage people to attend to see what we're all about!

There is lots of training coming up in the next couple months!

Thanks so much to all those who have organized and/or led training, taken additional training and staffed displays during the past month.

Congratulations to the new executive of SARSAV (Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers).

Training and Events

Prospective Members' Meeting

A Prospective Members' Meeting will be held on Monday, April 14, 7 pm, at the Fire Training Centre, 116 Ave W S. This session will provide an overview of Saskatoon Search and Rescue, membership expectations and training requirements. Please contact Membership Director Jarod Harvey if you are interested in attending.

Bike SAR Course

On Saturday, May 10, we will be hosting a Bike SAR course. Further details will follow regarding exact time, location and gear requirements.

Mountain bikes are a valuable addition to ground search and rescue as they can cover more terrain faster than someone on foot, while avoiding the disadvantages of motorized vehicle. On this course SSAR members will learn the role of bikes in SAR, how to search while riding a bike, technical riding skills, bike maintenance and much more.

Search Manager Course

A Search Manager course will be held in Saskatoon with multiple date options to allow flexibility for the attendees.
  • Recertifications May 26-28 or May 30-June 1
  • New certifications May 24-28 or May 24-25 and May 30-June 1
The course will be instructed by Scott Wright and based on the Emergency Response Institute (ERI) curriculum (updated since ERI was purchased by Tundra Group).

Prerequisites for new SSAR Search Managers are current Team Leader, member in good standing, committed to training, desire to work as a Search Manager and the support of the Chapter President. If you are interested please email SSAR President, Jeff Baxter.

For recertification, send previous training information to Scott. The registration deadline is the end of April, to be emailed directly to Scott.

Executive and Directors Meeting

The next SSAR Executive and Directors meeting will be held on Thursday, April 24, starting at 7 pm. These are the business-style meetings of our chapter and are held the last Thursday of each month. All members are welcome to attend. If you would like to speak to an issue concerning SSAR, please notify the President prior to the meeting so time can be allotted on the agenda.

If you would like a copy of the minutes from any past Executive and Directors meetings, please email us.

For Training and Educational Opportunities

We had an excellent and varied training day on March 15. Compass work for the Basic Searcher Candidates, some advanced GPS for the rest of the group, a communications/radio task, a search task, and a note taking and scene observation task. All while trying to stay warm on a windy -14 day! Thanks so much for all those who had a hand in organizing or instructing the various aspects of this day: Rebecca Basset, Jeff Baxter, Jarod Harvey, Dale Johnstone, Kent Orosz, Spencer Pitzel, Sean Taylor & Mark Wells.

So good to have some more AdventureSmart trained people! Training was held March 8 in conjunction with the SARSAV meeting. Thanks to instructors from across the Province -- Pat Casement, Rod Miskolczi, Sherry Runns, Scott Wright and Bryan Sarauer (PaddleSmart). Congrats to SSAR members Sherry Buller, Kate Davies, Henry Eng, Sean Taylor and Stephnie Watson who took the training.

On March 22 and 23 SSAR had a display at Cabela's Spring Great Outdoors Days and our members talked to customers about trip planning, training and taking the essentials, in addition to providing recruiting information for SSAR. Thanks to Rick Barsky, Sherry Buller, Henry Eng, Rod Miskolczi, Sean Taylor and Stephnie Watson for their time and knowledge.
