Emergency Communications Project

Our Sponsors

In August, Saskatoon Search and Rescue embarked on a major fundraising initiative for our Emergency Communications Project. We are thrilled that two organizations have already put their support behind us!

Thank you so much to SGI CANADA and the Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation for recognizing the value that SSAR brings to the community and the importance of good communication.

"SGI CANADA is pleased to support Saskatoon Search and Rescue," said Penny McCune, Vice President of Customer and Distribution Strategy. "I would like to take the opportunity to thank those who volunteer their time and assist Emergency Responders when crisis strikes." Read more . . .

We are actively seeking organizations or individuals who may be interested in supporting this project. Please contact us at saskaoonsearchandrescue@gmail.com

Evidence Search

Training Day

debrief photoOn September 20 we had an excellent training day! Dr. Ernie Walker and RCMP Sgt. Pete Garvey did classroom presentations on evidence searches, followed by an afternoon of outdoor scenarios. We are so lucky to have these experts in our own backyard! Thank you Dr. Walker and Sgt. Garvey!

It was also a great opportunity to work with members of the Saskatoon Police Service and SARSAV (Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers) chapters from Regina, North Corman Park, Big River, Prince Albert North, Porcupine Plain and Hwy 55.

Special thanks to the Saskatoon Police Service for providing coffee and classroom space and to University Heights Safeway for providing lunch!

Thanks to SSAR member Mark Wells for his take on the training:

"The morning started with coffee. Not my personal thing, but most of the participants in the course appreciated the morning java fix . . . " Read more . . .

What's Happening

At SSAR

On August 23 - 24 SSAR members were responsible for first aid duties at the International Society of Arboriculture Tree Climbing Competition. It was a fun and interesting event to watch and we were very impressed with the safety focus of this event. Thanks to Kent Orosz for organizing our attendance and to Shelley Ballard-McKinlay, Sherry Buller, Mike Galbiati-Bourassa and Sean Taylor for helping out.

We had so much training in September! Thank you so much to the following members:

  • Rebecca Basset (lead instructor), Shelley Ballard-McKinlay, Jarod Harvey, Rod Miskolczi for instructing the Basic Searcher weekend and to Louis Bossaer, Sherry Buller, Henry Eng, Jarrett Erker, Nelson Martell, and Tracy VanBrabant for coming out to assist the new recruits;
  • All the new Basic Searcher recruits for working so hard during their first month of training;
  • Jeff Baxter for leading the near-water search training;
  • Jeff Baxter for leading the Search Manager training evening;
  • Rebecca Basset for leading the first aid scenario training day and Shelley Ballard-McKinlay for assisting.
  • Shelley Ballard-McKinlay for organizing the evidence search training day and for liaising with Kim Audette of the RCMP SK SAR team to attend their search training on Sept 24 & 25.

Thanks to Saskatoon EMO and the Saskatoon Police Service who hosted a CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management) course. SSAR members Shelley Ballard-McKinlay, Rebecca Basset, Sherry Buller, Kate Davies, Sean Taylor and SSAR recruit Shelly Ottley attended this training.

Jeff Baxter attended a workshop on Ambiguous Loss by Duane Bowers who spoke about providing support for families of missing children. This was hosted by the Provincial Partnership Committee on Missing Persons and was a very informative presentation.
