March 2016

What's Happening

At SSAR

Once again, we've got lots of people and organizations to thank!
  • Rotary Club of Saskatoon Meewasin for inviting us to come and speak to them about our organization and to Sean Taylor for doing the presentation. We love having opportunities to let the community know more about us and what we do.
  • Sherry Buller, Louis Bossaer, Dale Liebrecht and Sean Taylor for doing AdventureSmart presentations during the past month. It's so good to get prevention and education out into the community to help people stay safe in the outdoors. Thanks to the Saskatoon Police Peacekeeper Cadets and the 3071 Royal Canadian Army Cadets for inviting us!
  • Rick Barsky, Dale Liebrecht, Don Brophy and Sean Taylor for providing first aid services at the Cameco Family Day Skating Party at the Meewasin Rink.
  • Kevin Blezy for providing us with radio communication tips during our monthly classroom training session and Dale Liebrecht for teaching radio and comms system trouble shooting and setting up many challenges for us during the field day.
  • Shelly Ottley for organizing our display at Cabela's Hometown Heroes Days and all our members who staffed the display: Shawn Bursey, Sean Taylor, Diane VanBrabant, Tracy VanBrabant, Stefani Longueil, Prem Sharma, Don Brophy, Rick Barsky and Paul Nutter.
  • The awesome folks at CTV Saskatoon for spending an afternoon filming us in order to create some promotional videos. We can't wait to see the final product!

Donations

To SSAR

Thank you to Agrium Vanscoy Potash Operations and their employee donations program for their $300 donation. Employees who volunteer are able to recommend their volunteer organization for a donation and that's exactly what SSAR member Kevin Blezy did. Thanks, Kevin!

Mental Health First Aid Training

Saskatoon Search and Rescue and the Saskatoon Police Service will be hosting a Mental Health First Aid course on September 17-18. The course is very valuable to SAR members as it teaches how to help people who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Members of all Saskatchewan SAR Chapters are welcome to attend. Cost will be approx. $35 to cover the cost of course materials (SSAR members will be covered by SSAR). Note: this course normally costs approx. $180 so this is a great opportunity. Further details and registration information will be made available once they are finalized.

SARSAV Meeting

The next meeting of the Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers (SARSAV) is Saturday, March 12, at 9:30 am at the Saskatoon Travelodge. The meeting is open to all members in good standing of Saskatchewan SAR chapters.

Search Dog Seminars

A Search Dog Bootcamp Seminar will be held in Regina, May 28-29 and a Search Dog Basics Seminar will be held June 3 - 5. Registration is now open for both seminars. Go to the Precision Search Dog website for more information or email mwtracks@netzero.net.

Executive and Directors Meeting

The next SSAR Executive and Directors meeting will be held on Thursday, March 31, at 7 pm. These are business-style meetings of our chapter and are held the last Thursday of each month. All members are welcome to attend. If you would like to speak to an issue concerning SSAR, please notify the President prior to the meeting so time can be allotted on the agenda. If you would like a copy of the minutes from any past meetings, please email us
