What's Happening

At SSAR

SSAR President, Jeff Baxter, recently took part in a major Search and Rescue exercise in Yellowknife, NWT. His role was both Search Manager and Exercise Director. What a great experience!

It's great that so many people are interested in learning more about SSAR. See information below about our next Prospective Members' Meeting on April 14 and encourage people to attend to see what we're all about!

The Basic Searcher Course continued on February 2 and 4 with an evening classroom session and a very "crisp" winter field day where new participants learned basic winter survival skills, shelter building, hypothermia wraps and signalling. Teams Leaders assisted in leading the tasks. Thanks to Jarod Harvey, Rod Miskolczi and Kent Orosz for instructing.

On February 17 we celebrated Family Day by providing first aid services for the Cameco Skating Party at the Meewasin Skating Rink. This was a great event to provide public awareness about our group. Thanks to Rebecca Basset, Sherry Buller, Henry Eng, Chris Franko and Kent Orosz for attending.

There is a lot of training and other events coming up in the next few months. Check out our training and events schedule and start putting some dates on your calendar!

This month's "Gear, Gadgets, Gizmos" section features a couple favourite items from one of our members.

What else would you like to see in the SSAR newsletter? Do you have something that should be included next month? Please email the Communications Director with your ideas, comments and feedback. Thanks!

Gear, Gadgets, Gizmos

And Other Cool Stuff

It's better than duct tape! Really it is. Gear Aid Tenacious Tape can be used to patch and repair all your outdoor gear without leaving a sticky mess. It comes in a variety of colours that make repairs almost invisible. (One of our members put a Tenacious Tape patch on a rip in a pair of pants over 2 years ago and it's still holding strong!)

Looking for a super lightweight, compact set of hiking poles? Again, highly recommended by one of our members, check out the Black Diamond Ultra Distance Trekking Pole.
