Think you might be interested in joining Saskatoon Search and Rescue? We are holding a Prospective Members' Meeting on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:30 pm at the Fire Training Centre, 116 Ave W S. Come and find out more about the training and expectations of being a SSAR member.

What's Happening

At SSAR

We are headed to SARscene in Edmonton! We're very excited that this year's conference is relatively close to home which allows several of our members to attend. SARscene is a great learning and training venue, an opportunity to meet SAR members from across Canada and learn about what is being done in other parts of the country.

September was an extremely busy month with SSAR training on the evenings of Sept 6 and 8, and a full day field day on Sept 10. Thanks to Dale Liebrecht, our Training Director, for leading the sessions and to everyone who helped out with instructing various topics. All this was on top of the Multi-Jurisdictional Search Exercise in Canora that several members also attended.

Thanks to Sherry Buller for leading an AdventureSmart presentation to an enthusiastic group of Girl Guides on Sept 24.

Multi-Jurisdictional

Search Exercise #2

Parkland Search and Rescue hosted the 2nd MJSE in Canora, September 16 - 18. Once again it was a great weekend of training, learning and working with SAR teams from across the province. Five SSAR members, Rebecca Basset, Sherry Buller, Bob Olson, Kent Orosz and Mark Wells, attended.

On Friday evening Rebecca, with assistance from Mark, instructed a session on Near Water Search training and Kent provided an overview of Ozi Explorer to some of the search managers.

Saturday was a full day search exercise and teams located the subject, provided first aid and extracted the subject from the field. There was also a night navigation exercise.

On Sunday morning, prior to the overall debrief, STARS provided information about setting up landing zones.

This training was made possible due to funding from the Communications NIF grant received by SARSAV

Activations

Report

On September 17, SSAR and other SARSAV teams were activated to assist Prince Albert National Park SAR and RCMP to search for three missing hikers who were more than 40 hours overdue. Late in the day on September 17, prior to our arrival, we were cancelled as the three subjects walked out on their own and were thankfully safe and sound.

On September 19, we were activated by RCMP to search for a missing 85 yr old male who had gone missing near East Trout Lake. He was located safely.

On September 28-29, we were activated by RCMP to search for a missing 55 year old female near Swift Current. Sadly, she was located deceased.

Mental Health First Aid Training

Saskatoon Search and Rescue will be hosting a Mental Health First Aid course on January 7 & 8, 2017. The course is very valuable to SAR members as it teaches how to help people who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Members of all Saskatchewan SAR Chapters are welcome to attend. The course will be held in the Saskatoon Police Service Community Room. Those outside of Saskatoon SAR should send an email to get more information or to register.

We are very thankful to Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation for providing funding to help cover the cost of course materials and lunch. Thank you so much!!

The next SSAR Executive and Directors meetings will be held on Thursday, October 27, at 7 pm. These are business-style meetings of our chapter and are generally held the last Thursday of each month. All members are welcome to attend. If you would like to speak to an issue concerning SSAR, please notify the President prior to the meeting so time can be allotted on the agenda. If you would like a copy of the minutes from any past meetings, please email us
What else would you like to see in the SSAR newsletter? Do you have something that should be included next month? Please email the Communications Director with your ideas, comments and feedback. Thanks!
