Happy Easter - we hope you have a safe and happy break over the upcoming long weekend.
Here's a quick snapshot of what you need to know for the short work-week ahead.

Treasurer Scott Morrison:

No changes to negative gearing - wants better outcomes for federal funding including NAHA

This morning Scott Morrison spoke at an AHURI event on the Government's approach to housing affordability.

You can read a copy of the speech here, but in summary:
  • The Treasurer was critical of the outcomes generated from the National Affordable Housing Agreement
'We don't need to spend more, and it's not necessarily about spending less, provided we spend it better,'
  • Ruled out changes to negative gearing
'Regardless of one's opinions of the merits or otherwise of negative gearing, it is an established and structural component of Australia's housing markets. Disrupting negative gearing would not come without a cost, especially to renters, let alone the wider economic impacts'
  • Spoke of boosting investment into affordable housing through supporting the community housing sector
'The bond aggregator would issue bonds to the market, and on-lend these funds to community housing providers — allowing them to access cheaper and longer term finance.'
