ROW WRAP-UP

2013 comes to an end: A busy and successful year for ROW

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community partners and individual supporters, ROW has celebrated its most accomplished year to date. In 2013, we offered new programs and scholarships, hosted several successful events and established new partnerships that will contribute to our organization’s continued growth. Wondering what had 2013 so jam-packed?

We offered an extra night of water practice every week, partnered with the amazing row team at University of Michigan for a Survivor Summer Camp and offered one-on-one sculling lessons through the Lincoln Park Boat Club. Not to mention, weekly practices helped our survivors get fit and gave them an opportunity to race at the Chicago Indoor Rowing Championships, the Chicago Sprints, Tail of the Fox and Head of the Rock.

And that was just the beginning.

ROW has found incredible ways to generate funds and rally support. We kicked things off in February with The Red ROWS Comedy Show—this Valentine-inspired, all-female talent production drew lots of laughs and momentous support, and it was written by our very own Coach Erin! Then, throughout the year, our amazing Charity Race Team raised nearly $15,000 by competing in an Ironman competition, half marathons, full marathons and even row marathons. Of course, our annual Let the Good Times Row gala took the cake when we raised over $25,000!

With such great effort and generous support, we’ve been able to provide financial scholarships to every underserved survivor who wanted to join the team. The extra funds even helped us launch the inaugural “Chicago Boat Race: Race4Row,” in partnership with Northwestern University Crew and the University of Illinois Crew.

Through it all, our team was never short on enthusiasm and never wanted for hard-working members or volunteers. Thanks to all who contributed their valuable time and resources for ROW's cause this year—we look forward to serving more survivors and providing the best programs possible in 2014.

Sixth Annual Let the Good Times ROW Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone for making this year's Let the Good Times ROW fundraiser the best yet!

Our tremendously generous guests raised more than $25,000 during our spectacular November 9 event. These donations will go toward member scholarships and expanding ROW's outreach to any survivor who wants to join the team.

Guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, desserts, drinks, a premiere silent auction and groovy soul music from DJ (and ROW coach) Sheena Smith. ROW member Kym Reynolds made the night especially memorable by sharing the moving story of her cancer journey. We also honored our Charity Race Team members, shared highlight accomplishments from 2013 and built even more enthusiasm for ROW in 2014!

The Chicago Boat Race

On October 26, well-bundled teams from Northwestern University and The University of Illinois pushed off for the inaugural "Race4Row: The Chicago Boat Race" on the north branch of the Chicago River. This partnership dual race involved a 6,000-meter row, and it resulted in more than $9,600 raised, not to mention a great show of support from athletes, family and friends.

In light of the response from athletes, coaches and ROW supporters to this special event, we're excited to announce that it will become an annual tradition! Thank you to all who participated, donated and cheered us on. We look forward to seeing you next year.

GO WILDCATS, GO ILLINI, GO ROW!

Bike4ROW Kick Off

The first Bike4ROW planning meeting took place in November and centered around plans for a cycling adventure around Lake Michigan with Coach Jenn. Volunteers and cycling enthusiasts gathered to share their knowledge of the Lake and the sport and helped plan a successful fundraising and awareness effort. Stay tuned for more news on how to get involved as a cyclist, volunteer and more!

It's worth remembering that while we're hard-working and driven, we're still a bunch of ladies who love to shop. So we treated ourselves to some retail therapy during the Athleta & ROW Shopping Event on October 24. Seasoned shoppers enjoyed crisp champagne and delicious snacks, all provided by various Southport businesses, as they browsed the racks for a little something new.

In the process, our shoppers walked away with more than fashionable fall athletic gear—they walked away having raised $1,000 for ROW.

Special thanks to Karen Remsen for setting up her beautiful jewelry designs at the event so shoppers could add some finishing touches to their outfits and for donating her October proceeds to our cause.
