|Welcome to the Resonate Testing October E-Newsletter.
Fire, Cameras, Action
New customers, complex combined vibe and fire testing, FAA presentations, major progress on ISO17025 accreditation, promo videos, Schools competition launch, etc. Another crazy month, a summary on some of this below!
Also Congratulations to the team at Thales on the opening of their new Electric Propulsion Lab in Belfast – it was a great event and fantastic to see ESA Astronaut Tim Peake.
Next Month come and see us at the Advanced Engineering Show at the Birmingham NEC, Stand N4, on November 2nd and 3rd. We’ll be displaying a mock-up of our FAA NexGen Kerosene Burner – unlit of course.

FAA Triennial - From our currently overseas correspondent, Tom Mallon
Tuesday Oct 25th, was another highlight for Resonate Testing. Dr Mary Kelly became the first Resonate staff member to present to the FAA Triennial Fire Testing conference in Atlantic City USA. Mary presented a technical paper on our findings gained during the commissioning of our propulsion system fire test laboratory focusing on the calibration of the flame temperature and heat flux density of the flame.
The triennial is the perfect forum for test houses, regulators, operators and suppliers to come together to discuss the hot (pardon the pun) topics facing the industry. It also reaffirms Resonate Testing commitment to the aerospace community to participate fully and contribute to developing the sector.
Mary fought off stiff competition from other staff wishing to attend the conference! (Indeed, the flights were booked before I was even told-MT)
With the nerves associated with speaking in such a forum over, Mary was able to concentrate on the rest of the FAA sessions, networking and the casino. Did we say it was hosted in the Tropicana Casino? Applications are now open for the next triennial!
Shake Rattle & Roll!
World Space Week took place during the month and our own Mary Kelly was part of a panel discussion with a group of industry professionals and local school children at the Armagh Planetarium.
We also took the opportunity to launch our own Schools Competition – Shake, Rattle and Roll – supported by CCEA, and Robert Hill and the NI Space Office.
The challenge involves students designing and building a cantilever structure representative of an Aircraft wing box section. The structure will need to span a certain length while being capable of supporting a mass of known quantity.
The structure will then be set up on the Resonate Testing vibration system, instrumented with accelerometers by Resonate Testing engineers and exposed to a vibration environment. The structure will SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL!
Whoever designs the cantilever structure which lasts the longest WINS, with a trip to the UK Space Centre in Harwell up for grabs.
We still have a couple of places available on the challenge if you know of any local schools who may be interested, details on the Resonate website or from CCEA.
New Promo Videos
Inspired by seeing the video from our friends at Hutchison Engineering we’ve had a series of promotional videos made, including some pretty cool drone work.
Here’s the first one, hope you like it, feel free to share it:
Caption Competition Winner
I have to admit this came from the team internally but it does rather sum up our last 6 months:
'Learning to crawl before you can walk'
We'll donate the Ulster Rugby tickets to a local charity.
Engineering Joke of the Month
We've run out of Rugby tickets so we're returning to our occasional segment - 'Engineering Joke of the Month'...
A wife asks her husband, a software engineer...
"Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6!" A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk. The wife asks him, "Why the heck did you buy 6 cartons of milk?" He replied, "They had eggs."
(Please feel free to do better, no guarantee of a prize but I’ll see what I can find in the cupboard - MT)
