SPYC Program Helps Young Adults
A nationally recognized and wildly successful jobs initiative for young adults will soon be returning for its sixth year. State Parks Youth Corps, also known as SPYC, launched in 2010, provides Missouri youth with the opportunity to work outdoors while improving Missouri’s state parks and historic sites. SPYC employs eligible Missourians between the ages of 17 and 24 at parks, historic sites, and natural areas across Missouri from May 1 through December 31. Applications for the program are now being accepted online at thinkoutside.mo.gov or at Green Hills Community Action Agency in Trenton, Missouri.

“We’ve been incredibly pleased with the contributions these young people have made to Missouri’s state parks and historic sites over the past several years,” said Bill Bryan, director of Missouri State Parks. “We look forward to continuing this important partnership for the benefit of the participants and the state’s award-winning parks system.”

During 2013, SPYC workers put in more than 97,000 hours performing a variety of tasks, including routine maintenance work benefiting 72 state parks and historical sites, creating and maintaining over 340 miles of trails, restoring thousands of acres of natural habitat, constructing hundreds of new structures, and even presenting over 1,000 programs to park goers.

PHA Adds Counties

Green Hills Community Action Agency and the Grundy County Public Housing Agency will begin administering the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8 / HUD) in the counties of Andrew, Buchanan (outside of St. Joseph city limits only), Clinton, and DeKalb effective July 1st, 2015. The prior administrative entity, ABCD PHA will be dissolved, making GCPHA the point of contact for all current tenants and landlords. Landlords working with ABCD should now contact GHCAA when a tenant moves out or if they have questions regarding any aspect of the change. Tenants should plan to contact GHCAA in the event of changes to income or household members, or if they plan to move out.

The Grundy County PHA currently serves the counties of Andrew, Buchanan (outside of St. Joseph city limits), Caldwell, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, Grundy, Harrison, Linn, Livingston (outside Chillicothe city limits), Mercer, Putnam, and Sullivan in northern Missouri. Individuals should contact GHCAA by calling toll-free 855-290-8544, option 5 or via email at grundypha@gmail.com.

Summer ECIP Currently Underway
Electric customers residing within the nine county core service area of Green Hills Community Action Agency may be able to see a slight reprieve from higher utility bills as things warm up across Missouri in the coming months. The Agency’s Summer ECIP (which stands for Energy Crisis Intervention Program), is slated to begin Monday, June 1st, 2015. Funding is limited, and can only be accessed by clients in the event of an electric shut off emergency.

If you were approved for winter energy assistance between October 1st, 2014 and March 31st, 2015, your household is pre-eligible for these summer funds. If you did not apply and/or receive help with utilities, or you have moved, since the recent winter EA season, GHCAA will require a new, completed application with supporting documentation before help can be made available. If you do not remember if the agency assisted you with a bill, you are welcome to call them at 855-290-8544.

Summer ECIP applications will not be accepted until June 1st, 2015. Applications will be made available to the public via mail, e-mail, fax, or online at ghcaa.org. Clients do not need to schedule appointments or visit the Trenton office to get help with utilities, just call GHCAA toll-free at 855-290-8544.

Each year, during select summer and winter months, the EA and ECIP programs help countless Missourians by supplementing utility payments if they happen to fall behind. There are strict qualifications and regulations surrounding the program, and each household must follow certain guidelines and meet requirements before they can be provided with assistance.

Those with questions are invited to contact GHCAA by calling the Agency toll-free at 855-290-8544.
