Reduce your footprint this Summer - take the #PlasticFreeJuly Challenge!

We’re challenging all our friends to take part in #PlasticFreeJuly this year! Can you give up disposable plastic for an entire month? This movement has grown from a handful of participants in Western Australia in 2011 to millions of participants across more than 150 countries worldwide today!
By encouraging people to be more aware of their plastic use, we can create a cleaner world for generations to come. Part of this involves supporting behavior change and helping others habitually #choosetorefuse common disposable plastics such as shopping bags, straws, takeaway containers and coffee cups – just to name a few.
Get excited for the 2018 Gardeners' Advice Fair, sponsored by the Durham Garden Forum in partnership with the Durham County Extension Master Gardeners! On Tuesday, July 24th from 6:30pm to 8pm, you can get answers to some of those nagging gardening questions, learn the basics of assessing plant health, and find out about container and straw bale gardening from the incredible Craig Lehoulier, aka the NC Tomato Man! This event is free to attend.
We're proud to announce that this year's Black August in the Park will be a Waste Wise Event! We're working with the event organizers to provide staffed waste stations, improved commitment to waste wise guidelines by vendors, and showcase the best practices of a Waste Wise Event. If you'd like to be a volunteer Waste Warrior at this event, please contact Roderick Franklin at

Interested in putting on your own Waste Wise Event? We're creating a Durham Waste Wise Event Guide that will be free and available to anyone looking to reduce the environmental footprint of their events. The guide will be available for download from our website by mid-Summer 2018.
Get excited for the Second Annual Pick Up With Pups in collaboration with our friends at the Durham Animal Protection Society! On Sunday, August 19th from 9am to 11am join us to beautify Durham while hanging out with cute, adoptable pups from the Durham APS. Give back to your community AND fall in love with a future family member, all at one event!
As many of you know, Keep Durham Beautiful is an official host site for the Conservation Trust for NC AmeriCorps Program.  As of last week Jonathan Hill and Dawn Keyser, the members that have been serving with us since September of last year, officially fulfilled their terms of 1700 service hours each! Together over the past 10 months they coordinated over 100 events, leading 3,204 volunteers in picking up 71,384 pounds of litter and planting 1,148 trees. They also educated over 600 adults and youth on litter prevention, community greening, and waste reduction and helped establish over 50 new community partnerships. Jonathan is going on to work with another Keep America Beautiful affiliate in Charlotte, and Dawn will be continuing to work with us part-time through the Fall. We're so grateful for their service to the Durham community and to CTNC for continuing to host such a valuable program, and we're excited to welcome a brand new AmeriCorps service member this coming September!

Take action in your community!
