Rainy Day Planting in Northbrook

On Saturday, 37 volunteers gathered for a tree planting made possible by our partnership with Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative, Delta Airlines, and Urban Offsets. Together these volunteers and neighbors powered through the rain and mud and were able to plant 76 trees, an hour ahead of schedule! A mix of oak, ginkgo, redbud, cherry and crape myrtle trees were planted within the Club Boulevard Durham Housing Authority community on Glenbrook Drive and along East Club Boulevard, where they will provide shade, clean air and water, and natural beauty for years to come.

Take action in your community!

Happy Valentine's Day! Whether this is a day to take yourself out to the movies, help your kids make Valentines for their classes, or celebrate your significant other, this is a special opportunity to support those we love.

This can also include organizations that you think are spreading the love and care in our community! We would be so grateful to have you show your love for Keep Durham Beautiful and all that we do for the Durham community. Any size donation helps us continue our work cleaning up litter, planting trees, creating pollinator habitat, and hosting educational workshops. Trying to reduce waste this year?

Maybe trying to reduce your waste, particularly plastic waste, this year was part of a New Year's resolution? Good news is it doesn't have to be New Year's to start a resolution. We've written up a whole blog post to give you simple tips! Remember, when it comes to plastic waste, don't let perfection become the enemy of good. You don't have to be completely zero waste or run a blog to make a difference. Just making a switch from disposable coffee cups to reusable ones, or skipping using a plastic straw most of the time, are helpful actions. Let us know what steps you've taken or want to work towards!

Save the date for Creek Week

While we are still working hard during tree planting season, our next big initiative is coming up quickly. Creek Week, the third week in March, is a collaborative effort of multiple non-profits, environmentally conscious businesses, city an county departments offering events to learn about, engage with, and take care of nature, particularly our creeks, streams, and watersheds. We will have chances to go kayaking, clean up our rivers, see award-winning documentaries, and even learn about green infrastructure this spring! We have events for all ages, so whether you want to go by yourself or with a friend, or bring your family along, there are plenty of opportunities to learn about being a steward of our waterways.
