Five trees planted thanks to Hem + Spire

Thanks to the generosity and commitment of Hem + Spire we were able to plant 5 beautiful trees last week near a parking lot off of Corcoran Street last Friday. Hem + Spire is a real estate investment and management company committed to preserving the historical features of buildings while refitting them for modern use. They also have showed their dedication to the Durham community through protecting and improving its environment through their gift of these trees. As the trees grow, they will help keep the city cooler as they shade the parking lot, all while cleaning the air and water around them.

Thank you Hem + Spire for giving the gift of trees and being committed to preserving our environment!

Take action in your community!

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

A new take on tree planting!

Last week volunteers came out for two work days dedicated to transplanting 200 tree saplings to go to their new homes throughout Durham! We planted these small seedlings three years ago thanks to our partnership with Duke Campus Farm, staff and volunteers nurtured some to be over 6 feet tall! While the skill to plant a tree is excellent to have, there is also something to be learned in how to uproot a tree without damaging roots.

Our volunteers were able to enjoy playing in the dirt, getting a real work out in, and learning this new skill of how to uproot trees so they can be transplanted.

Planting with Durham School of the Arts

Durham School of the Arts staff, students and families brought 17 volunteers out to help us plant and mulch 25 trees along the streets adjacent to the school. It was a wonderful opportunity to teach and connect the school community with the green infrastructure that will shade nearby sidewalks and parking areas.

Save the date for Creek Week

While we are still working hard during our tree planting season, our next big initiative is coming up quickly: Creek Week! This week is a collaborative effort of multiple non-profits and environmentally conscious businesses offering events to learn about, engage with, and also take care of nature, particularly our creeks, streams, and watersheds.

There will be chances to go kayaking, clean up our rivers, see award-winning documentaries, and even learn about green infrastructure this spring! We have events for all ages, so whether you want to go by yourself or with a friend, or bring your family along, there are plenty of opportunities to learn about being a steward of our waterways.
