The Board of Trustees of Unity Worldwide Ministries (UWM) is pleased and excited to announce the hiring of a new executive director to take over the lead of Unity Worldwide Ministries administrative offices. Rev. Shad Groverland has been selected by the Board following an extensive vetting and interview process and will begin working by early October.
The Board expressed its excitement about Shad’s innovative vision and knowledge relating to upgrading and enhancing our technological and social media operations, as well as his passion and lifelong experience in the Unity movement.
Currently serving as co-minister of Unity of Boulder, Colorado, Rev. Shad expressed his deep gratitude for the Board’s faith and trust in his experiences and leadership to guide Unity Worldwide Ministries and the Unity movement into the future.
Rev. Shad was born and raised in Unity, learning Unity’s principles from his parents Rev. Jack and Norma Groverland. As a youth he was active in YOU (Youth of Unity) programs both locally and at a national level. Though he grew up in church, his first passion was music production, which led him to earn a bachelor of science degree in sound engineering from the University of Colorado and start a 25-year career in sound production and management. He went on to use this degree in Los Angeles, mixing sound for television and feature films before moving on to Las Vegas to mix live concerts and theatrical productions.
Shad’s skills and leadership were continually recognized throughout his sound engineering career. Starting as a sound technician with the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, he rose through the ranks to sound supervisor for the Grand and was promoted further to the position of production manager for MGM Resorts International. This corporate-level position was responsible for merging and overseeing the audio visual production departments for all ten MGM properties in the Las Vegas area.
After a series of life events in 2012, Rev. Shad received his own call to ministry. In 2015 he graduated from the Unity Urban Ministerial School and was ordained in 2016. While in school, Shad was hired by Unity of Las Vegas, Nevada, where he served for five years before answering the call to return home to Unity of Boulder to co-minister with his sister, Syntysche, and father, Jack.
Rev. Shad’s Unity experience is vast and long-term. He served as youth director and Board Trustee for Unity of Las Vegas prior to ordination. A volunteer for the Southwest Region’s conference of Unity, he was youth camp counselor, youth and family team leader, and NGU (Next Generation Unity) minister advisor.
In 2018, he was appointed to the UWM Board of Trustees and had the appointment confirmed by the convention body in 2019. He was elected secretary of the Board in 2019 and 2020. While on the board, Shad served on the Focusing Forward Core Team and Technology Team, the Convention Planning Team, Interim CEO and Consultant Interview Teams, as well as the HUG (Help Unity Grow) Team.
Prior to applying for the position of executive director, Rev. Shad requested, and was granted, a leave of absence from the Board of Trustees. While on leave, Shad was not included in any email correspondence, discussions, or decisions relating to Board activity or actions.
Unity Leadership Transition
The hiring of an executive director comes as the culmination of Board actions in reorganizing the administrative leadership of UWM over the past 15 months. The hiring process, led by Board Chair Emerita Rev. Toni Fish, started with a résumé review team consisting of former Board member Christopher Ashe, Rev. Joy Wyler, Rev. Temple Hayes, and Linda Gillepsie, LUT. They reviewed the 23 applications and narrowed the choice to five candidates to be referred for interviews.
Two teams of four (Rev. Rich Broderhousen, Rev. Richard Bunch, Rev. Sandra Campbell, Rev. Ev Godina, Rev. Pat Williamson, Rev. Sherrie Taylor-Jones, Rev. Jeanmarie Eck, and Unity World Headquarters (UWH) CEO Jim Blake) each interviewed the top five candidates and referred three to the full Board of Trustees for final interviews and selection.
Rev. Shad will follow in the footsteps of Rev. Patricia Bass who has served as Interim CEO since September 2019. The transition in leadership will begin in the next few weeks with Rev. Shad’s official start date pending the necessary transferring of responsibilities in Boulder and relocation to Unity Village.
