Happy Holidays from Regarding Susan Sontag

Dear friends of the Sontag Project,
Season’s Greetings! After a fantastic 2015, we wanted to send our news.

Regarding Susan Sontag continues its extraordinary festival run, having screened in 127 festivals in 33 countries since its premiere in April 2014. The film won Best Documentary at both Fire!! Mostra Internacional de Cinema Gai i Lesbià de Barcelona and Festival Mix Milano! The film screened at the Institute for Contemporary Arts and other arthouse cinemas in London in May and June. We were also delighted to be included in “Skyfest” documentary programming on Virgin America’s in-flight entertainment system, through our partnership with funder California Humanities. There is nothing quite like taking a flight and knowing that your own film is one of the available entertainment choices! (Please see our website for a complete list of festivals.)

Other recent honors include the FOCAL International Award for Best Use of Archival Footage in an Arts Program, which director Nancy Kates received at a black-tie event in London in May. We were also nominated for a Grierson Trust Award for Best Arts Documentary, also in England, and advanced to the final round of the Cinema Eye Honors 2015 Nonfiction Film for Television Award.
We are continuing our work on outreach and distribution of the film, which includes plans to bring it to schools, colleges and universities, conferences, libraries and community groups. Director Nancy Kates screened the film at the 2015 American Library Association conference for an enthusiastic audience, noting “no librarians were harmed in the making of this film.” The next conference is the Modern Language Association meeting in January 2016. A number of key nonprofit partners have joined us, including the Ms. Foundation for Women and PEN, the international writers organization Sontag headed in the mid-1980s. We also have partial funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to support our outreach work, such as developing a high school curriculum and a pilot to use the film in teen writing workshops. The Film Collaborative of Los Angeles continues to do a great job distributing the film to festivals while Women Make Movies in New York is handling educational bookings. Nancy has been speaking at various organizations and venues; to set up a personal appearance, please contact us at
The film continues to generate positive press and reviews, particularly in Europe. Here are two recent interviews: one from Axelle in France and the other from Good2b in Spain.

This film has been a labor of love, after more than eight years of production; the results show the dedication, creativity and professionalism of a truly talented group of people. With forty minutes of archival footage, it was an expensive endeavor: we are still in the process of raising our much-needed outreach and distribution funding. We are honored by our support from funders, partners and well wishers, and would like to thank all of our supporters for believing in the project, which has made it possible to share the film with viewers around the world. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the Sontag film at our website,, or directly on our fiscal sponsor’s website, The Center For Independent Documentary. A complete list of funders is available on our site.
If you have not yet done so, please connect with us on the social media below to keep up with screenings and events. The film is available to stream on HBO GO through 2016.
Happy Holidays and all best wishes for 2016!
For the Sontag team,
Nancy Kates
