When discussing the attributes of a “good” rider, what specifics come to mind? Are they the same if we are talking about a safe rider, or are they different? What about if discussing a “skilled” rider? Do all three of these titles fall under the same umbrella of being a competent motorcyclist? Or do different images come to mind you when you think of these descriptions?
MAKE A LIST
For this issue of the Snyder's Riders Tune-up, we ask that you put together your own list of five-10 (or more) skills or attributes that you feel a good, safe, and/or skilled rider should possess. To start, think of a few riders you look up to and jot down what stands out about their riding, their attitude, or their general approach to being a motorcyclist.
Keep your list handy and add more ideas as they come to you. Think outside the box. It could be how that person promotes the sport or their joy of riding when out in public. It could also be their beliefs on wearing gear, taking a rider training class, or how they represent motorcycling both on and off the bike.
Once you have your list, go back through and grade yourself on each component you wrote down. Grade on a scale of one (1) to five (5). One (1) being a low or “never” score and five (5) being a high or “always” score. Now look over your score and pick out those areas where you scored the lowest.
You just made a customized biker self-improvement guide for the upcoming motorcycle season! And let's not forget the categories that received a high score. It's important to maintain or even build upon those areas as you continue to refine your riding skillset.
