American Education in Kosovo

PRESS RELEASE     20 May 2013

“A.U.K. – RIT celebrates 10 years in Kosovo”
The Board of Trustees of A.U.K. is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Winfred Thompson as this institution’s President. Dr. Thompson is an experienced academic administrator who prior to joining A.U.K. served as the president of the American University of Kuwait from 2010 through May 2013. Before that, Dr. Thompson served as Chancellor of the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates and as the President of the University of Central Arkansas. Like former President Bill Clinton, Dr. Thompson was born and raised in the great state of Arkansas.

Dr. Thompson’s appointment is the result of an intensive global search in which A.U.K.’s Board, faculty and staff, student and alumni representatives, and U.S. university partners all participated.

Dr. Thompson earned his Ph.D in diplomatic history from the University of Chicago as well as law degrees from George Washington University, and his undergraduate degree at the University of Arkansas.

Dr. Thompson shares the Board of Trustees’ commitment to provide a high quality, American education to the young men and women of Kosovo and the wider region. In the words of A.U.K. Board Foundation Chairman Richard Lukaj, “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Thompson and his wife, Carmen, to the A.U.K. community and to have him lead the A.U.K. into the next phase of its development”.
