The Tasting Bar ...
16 Mile Cellar
2012 Pinot Noir, Rebel

($22.95 - Winery Only)
The simplicity of Pinot Noir is on full display for all to see: earthy and sour cherry lead things off, within there are also notes of cassis that linger in the background … there’s welcome a juiciness mid-palate before finishing with gentle tannins and spice.
Rating: ****
Chateau des Charmes
2012 Cabernet-Merlot, Old Vines

($21.95 - Winery Only)
There’s an initial quiet leanness right off the hop, but if you let the wine sit and come together in the glass you’ll be rewarded: cedar, cassis, blackberry, coffee, and black tea – there’s also big tannins right out of the bottle so either decant or give it another 2 years before opening it up.
Rating: ****
Hinterland
2013 Les Etoiles

($39.00 - Winery Only)
A 60/40 Chardonnay-Pinot Noir sparkling with 3 years on lees ... here it’s the acidity that really shines, and it should it’s bubbly after all; there’s also a lovely lime-citrus note to carry it along plus pear, apple and grapefruit just to add a little something extra; I’m almost getting tired of saying this but this is yet again another great little bubbly from Hinterland.
Rating: ****+
Flat Rock Cellars
2014 Pinot Noir

($20.40 - Winery & LCBO)
These “off years” always seem the best for Flat Rock’s entry-level Pinot: clean, fresh and very Pinot in both aroma and palate. You’ll find earthy, cranberry and beet root notes along with white pepper and good acidity on the finish.
Rating: ****

Pillitteri
2013 Cabernet-Merlot

($17.50 - Winery Only)
This ’13 Cabernet-Merlot has some real appeal, first off it’s smooth on the palate – it seems to add the right layer at the right time: black cherry, cassis and mocha all come before a slight bit of spice on the finish. Well made, good structure, and pleasant lingering finish – what more could you want.
Rating: ****

Trius
2014 Red

($22.95 - LCBO & Winery)
This iconic Ontario red is Cabernet Franc dominant this year at 55%, then adding Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). It’s also celebrating 25 years – the brand not the wine. It’s a little on the ‘lean’ side, which lends itself to an attractive finish and potential ageing that could give it some elegance in the future. It’s silky smooth with tobacco and black cherry as its jumping off point. Give it a couple of years then re-investigate, you should be pleasantly surprised.
Rating: ****
