All Canadian
Wine Championships:
The Great Gamays

Hello <<First Name>>,
Getting to taste at the All Canadian Wine Championships is one of the highlights of my year – there I get a chance to try wines from across Canada and witness first-hand how Ontario is doing against our B.C.-Bretheren (we get our asses handed to us every year): 2016 numbers – 313 to 127 … but British Columbia does enter twice as many wines as Ontario.

As you might also be aware I’m a huge Gamay fan and was lucky enough to taste the Gamay flight this year and was impressed with how BC is faring with the grape (I already know Ontario can do a great job) … here’s a brief look at the top five Gamays that I tasted from British Columbia:

Michael Pinkus - Grape Guy

Deep Roots 2015 Gamay
($24.00 - Winery Only)
--- British Columbia ---
Gold Medal, All Canadian Wine Championships … lovely mix of red and black cherry fruit both on the nose and palate, while on the finish white pepper and strawberry brings this amazing Gamay-experience to close.
Rating: ****+
Sandhill 2014 Gamay Noir, Estate
($19.99 - Winery Only)
--- British Columbia ---
Gold Medal, All Canadian Wine Championships … this juicy version of Gamay is loaded with sweet black cherry and other lively red fruit notes, it’s the acidity that makes this one such a joy to drink with or without food.
Rating: ****+
Pipe Dreams 2014 Gamay Noir
($48.00 – Winery Only)
--- British Columbia ---
Gold Medal, All Canadian Wine Championships … layers of juicy red fruit a la cherry, strawberry and raspberry, balanced off by white pepper and a sour cherry finish – sure there’s a touch of sweetness on the mid-palate, but it’s from the great ripe fruit and not the fault of augmented sugar.
Rating: ****+
Desert Hills 2015 Gamay
($17.29 – Winery Only)
--- British Columbia ---
Silver Medal, All Canadian Wine Championships … there’s a little bit of tannins to this wine, which is found amongst the sweet cherry fruit and white pepper, it is truly enjoyable on both the aroma and palate fronts.
Rating: ****
Robin Ridge 2013 Gamay
($24.71 – Winery Only)
--- British Columbia ---
Silver Medal, All Canadian Wine Championships … one of the oldest of the Gamays tasted, three years from vintage date and still going strong, yet it is developing more than just the standard juicy red fruits: earthy, black cherry with a touch of pepper and cran-raspberry finish.
Rating: ****
