Vintages Report December 12, 2015
New & Noteworthy Wines

Hello GrapeGuy,

This is the time of year where everyone is going to try to wow you with a "best of" list ... but not me. I present you with a "best" wines list of sorts every week, so it would be rather redundant for me to rehash old material.  Instead I'm giving you a smorgasbord of Big Ontario Reds this week that you'll want to either give as gifts or keep for yourself, but whatever you do, enjoy.

This is my last e-blast of the year,
starting in the New Year I will be rolling out a consistent weekly "newsletter / e-blast" cycling between the following 4 topics:  Canadian Top 3; International Top 5; An Ontario "What's New" featuring 6 new wines; and newsletter with article / commentary (order still to be determined).  As always thanks for reading and Happy Holidays.

Cheers.

Big Reds for the Holidays ...
Pondview 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bella Terra
($39.95 - Winery Only)
When it comes to consistency the Bella Terra Cab is one of Pondview’s best – bottled “unfiltered” again (2nd year in a row) and made with fruit picked deep into November ... read full review here

Finally at Pondview …

Peller 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon,
Andrew Peller Signature Series

($47.00 - Winery Only)
“They” say 2012 was the year to make Cabernet Sauvignon, and after tasting this bruiser from Peller I’d agree … this Cabernet was in barrel for 18 months in a mix of 55% French and 45% American oak of which 65% was new – that’s a whole whack of new oak, but the fruit sucked it in bathing in it like a debutante in jewels and furs ... read full review here

Another Monster Red for the Cellar …
Peller 2012 Cabernet Franc,
Andrew Peller Signature Series

Inniskillin 2013 Cabernet Franc Reserve
($22.95 - Winery Only)
Those who started the rumour that 2013 was not a good vintage (quality-wise) should be drawn and quartered … it’s not a spectacular vintage across the board but the wines that are trickling out show real depth of flavour and great drinkability ... read full review here

Don’t underestimate …
Inniskillin 2012 Merlot Reserve
Big Head 2012 Syrah, Unreserved
($45.00 - Winery Only)
If you have not jumped on the Ontario Syrah bandwagon yet here’s one that might make you take the leap.  22 months in brand new “cigar barrels” with fully dried fruit … nose shows sweet cherry, plum and pepper but it’s the palate that’ll sway you ... read full review here

Nothing Simple Here …
Big Head 2013 Red
Magnotta 2013 Cabernet Franc, Limited Edition
($18.95 - Winery Only)
Magnotta’s value always shows through; at under $20 this is a pure delight for the senses and for Cabernet Franc fans; it hits all the right notes with smoky-raspberry, hints of cherry, tobacco and nice grit from the tannins and good oak integration … nothing overwhelms on this wine.
Rating: ****
Sprucewood Shores 2013 Lady in Red
($14.95 - Winery & LCBO)
Another value red that quite simply over-delivers at its price point … that’s nothing new, as the Lady in Red continues her trend of quality to price.  The list of her attributes is long: raspberry, cherry, plum, blackberry, blueberry, vanilla and smoke … vibrancy of fruit, nice tannin structure; a real nice drink now wine … but save a few for the next couple of years too (up to 2-4 years).
Rating: ****
