Update from our Chair

I am delighted to welcome you to this first edition of our revamped Newsletter and with it comes my apologies for not keeping in touch recently.

In May we were delighted to hear that the Friends had played a very prominent part in the project’s £12.1M bid  to the Heritage Lottery Fund gaining a “first round pass” and that the partnership had been awarded £465K to develop the bid for final submission in March 2013.

The current funding has enabled the Friends to appoint a full-time Manager, Lisa Cowley and a half-time Development Officer, Fay Bailey.  Both are proving to be excellent appointments and indeed, you can be certain of receiving better communication in future as Lisa will take over responsibility for organising future newsletters.

I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

What do you want to see in the Flaxmill Maltings?

We are putting together various documents in support of the HLF bid, and we need your help to do this.

Please complete our questionnaire, which looks at different options for the use of the public spaces and interpretation of the various significances of the site.

Bearing in mind the other developments that are taking place in Shrewsbury, especially the Old Music Hall, we need to identify activities and storylines that complement rather than compete with these.

We are also looking to work in partnership with organisations like Shropshire Archives, the Museum Service, Shropshire Wildlife Trust and the Hive to deliver a varied and exciting programme of activities.

As you know, in the current challenging financial climate the site will have to cover its operating costs, so we need to identify revenue earning opportunities.

Thank you for all your help and Merry Christmas and let’s hope for good news in 2013.

Marion Blockley.
