Building Blocks for Life

"Courage is the power to let go of the familiar"  -- Raymond Linquist

FALL 2014

Student gappers are currently volunteering in our national parks in Utah and Arizona, traveling in Argentina, living with families in Mynamar, dancing with fire in Costa Rica, painting in Mexico, interning in Wooster, Mass, and gaining fluency in Salamanca, Spain.
While some students are stepping off the college track to figure out their purpose or major, others are exploring life beyond the classroom before entering college.  All have found the courage to venture outside the familiar and test themselves in different environments involving new languages, customs, climates, and cuisine.  The confidence gained in overcoming language barriers or completing a taxing community service project can be applied to life situations later on.  Whether it be adjusting to a moody roommate, interviewing for an internship, caretaking for an elderly parent, dealing with a divorce, handling a life-changing diagnosis; each gap experience, especially the more challenging ones, teaches self-discovery and resilience. Gappers become more willing to engage in class, to invest themselves and volunteer in change-making programs, and to risk by speaking up and out against injustice. It is imperative that students understand how less fortunate people live, whether in our own culture or another, in order to become global citizens. They in turn develop into more balanced, thoughtful leaders in our own country.  Gap experiences change students’ perspectives forever and provide building blocks for their future and our country's.
Interested in learning more about the benefits in taking a gap year and hearing from former gapper alumni panelists and parents? Calendar the 2015 Gap Year presentation at Kent Denver High School, Englewood, Colorado on January 10, 3-5 pm.  The presentation is free, but RSVP is requested under the Events link on  Marion also conducts group or individual presentations free of charge at local High Schools.  The annual gap year fairs, which follow this presentation a few days later, provide a forum for students to talk with gap year vendors (see sidebar for details).

Gap Year Student Testimonial:
“I was lucky enough to begin working with Marion early on in my planning process, and it was the best decision I could have made. She walked me through all of my dreams and examined every possibility, giving each the attention and care it deserved as a real opportunity. Throughout the whirlwind of potential experiences, she always remained focused on me as an individual. She delicately picked out the experiences that would allow the most growth, the deepest beauty, the most profound culture, and the greatest adventure for me at this exact moment in time. She is a joy to work with!”
