WINTER 2015
“Apps” and first semester grades are in for seniors and now?... Coast until graduation? Slide into senioritis a few months early? Or perhaps... Contemplate doing something different, something extraordinary, next year?
Colleges now grant deferments more than ever before as they recognize the value of more mature, experienced gap students entering college a semester or year later. So if your future college says yes, then what is holding you back? Perhaps you or your parents are worried about financing a gap year?
Address this concern by working over the summer to earn money for your program expenses. Ask your church to donate to your community service project. Tap into crowdfunding sites such as Gofundme.com, Goennounce.com, Projecttravel.com, Indiegogo.com, and Kickstarter.com specifically designed to help students raise funds across a broad community network. Suggest a monetary donation in lieu of birthday or graduation gifts. Write an “interest piece” for your local newspaper or radio station to raise awareness about your travel plans. Ask gap year program staff about scholarships and tuition discounts. Apply for a grant from your local rotary club or from testdriveyourfuture.com, livfund.org, foundationforglobalscholars.org, iie.org. In addition, if the gap year program is an American, registered, 501(c)(3) charitable organization and the student’s intention is to only volunteer, then the cost of the program, including travel, is entirely tax deductible for the parents. Finally, several no cost/low cost volunteer/internship programs cover transportation, room and board, and offer a stipend upon completion or college credit. So take Simon Raven’s advice, “life is short and the world is wide”, do something life changing! You won’t regret it!
How NOT to do a gap year!
