As the new year approaches, people often set goals and resolutions. Why not resolve to take a risk and do something outside your normal routine? Now more than ever in our global society, we need Americans to travel to a foreign country, learn a second language, immerse themselves in a new culture, and make a difference with a community service project. Whether it be you—as a mid-career adult or retiree—or your child, consider making 2016 the year you take the leap!
If you have tried googling “gap year”, it can definitely feel overwhelming, with so many programs offered and so many ads to wade through. Resources such as the American Gap Association, TEEN LIFE Guide-Gap Year issue, and Go Overseas.Com are useful. However, it is important to select the right program match in terms of personality and in meeting interests and goals. How can an advisor be beneficial?
A gap year expert draws from a variety of reliable sources: program evaluations based on clients' experiences, established relationships with gap program staff, and oftentimes, her/his own personal gap experiences. In addition, a gap year advisor learns about each person (student or adult) with an in-depth online questionnaire and face-to- face meeting or phone interview to tailor-make the best recommendations.
To locate and attend a local gap year fair during January-February, 2016, check usagapyearfair.org. For Colorado and Rocky Mountain residents, the gap year fairs will take place on February 16 and 17 in Denver and Boulder (see sidebar). For more in-depth information regarding all things “gap”, attend the presentation on January 30 in Denver (see sidebar). Current and former gap year students and parents of gap year students will share their insights and perspectives and answer questions.
Starting January 1, 2016, Marion is taking the “leap” by offering gap consulting services to adults who are mid-career or semi-retiring from their professions. See her website for more details.
