SUMMER 2014
Congratulations to high school graduates! For those of you thinking of taking a gap semester or year, don’t delay in applying for this Fall as programs are filling up. If a program has already closed, put your name on the waiting list as students’ plans can change and spaces often do open up. Remember the option of week-to-week programs as they often allow for more flexibility with start dates and budgetary constraints. Finally, for graduates who are “gapping” it and re-applying to colleges, be creative and write about the inevitably rich experiences gained from your gap semester this upcoming Fall. Craft a dynamic, provocative college essay that DEMANDS acceptance!
Juniors, are you depleted from ACT/SAT/SAT Subject tests, AP and honors coursework, a ridiculous number of extracurricular activities, Spring dramatic performances, intense varsity team play-offs, rigorous final exams, and extraordinary efforts to boost that year-end grade point average for your high school transcript? Do you ever wonder how it would feel to learn without that academic stress of homework, deadlines, tests, and neurotic concern about your grade point average?
Then join the growing number of graduating seniors who are daring to step outside the traditional academic classroom and to take charge of their own learning. Whether it be teaching English in Nepal, tracking endangered white rhinos in Uganda, or mentoring inner city school students in the United States, gap year students proactively learn self-reliance and problem-solving by shaping their own volunteer or internship experiences, and thereby gain vital skills and direction for college. So why not dare to live life outside the four walls of a traditional academic environment for a semester or year? Take advantage of the adventure out there!
Gap Year Parent Testimonial:
“Marion took on the challenge of helping our daughter structure her gap semester and handled everything with grace and expertise. She swiftly got to know our daughter and her ideas and goals well while hearing and respecting our parental concerns and boundaries. She successfully helped our daughter find a program that is a great match for her. For us to have tried to do that on our own would have easily been very overwhelming and difficult. We are deeply grateful for Marion's help and guidance”.
