Film in Television archives. What is to be done?
June 21^st online, free access.

There is a 50-year history of film in TV archives. Before videotape, film was the storage method for TV. Newsgathering used film until the early 1980s. High-quality dramas were produced on film right into the 1990s. Up to 30% of TV archive content from the 20th century is on film.

Film is special: the technology to play it isn’t obsolete, it can last many decades if properly stored. So while videotape has had to be converted to files, large amounts of film remain on shelves. Some film has been converted to videotape, often with a loss of quality, as an ‘access copy’. Much of the rest remains without access: can’t be used in production, can’t be viewed online. Its public value and its commercial value remain locked away.

What should be done with this film? What has already been done? What is the cost and quality of various ways to release the value of these film holdings? This seminar will present actual case studies and practical guidance.

FIAT/IFTA General Assembly 2022

FIAT/IFTA will host the traditional General Assembly during the FIAT/IFTA World Conference 2022 in Cape Town, most likely on Wednesday, October 5th. In this Assembly, FIAT/IFTA members will receive updates about the federation's initiatives over the last two years and the budget status. They will also have the opportunity to voice any concerns or remarks. In addition, six members of the Executive Council will be elected, and a new FIAT/IFTA President. Forms for (self-) nomination for the roles of Executive Council member and President will become available on the FIAT/IFTA website in the following weeks. The deadline for candidacy is October 4th, 2022.

If you wish to participate in the General Assembly, please consult your organisation's membership status before October 4th, 2022.

Media Management Commission Webinars

A tremendous thanks to all our panellists and moderators and the MMC Seminar Committee and FIAT/IFTA office for a successful series of webinars in May 2022.

The Media Management Commission (MMC) hosted the 10th installation in our Changing Sceneries, Changing Roles seminars with Spotlights on Digital Transformation in Archives. We had the opportunity to revisit automated tools and workflows, seeing how they performed and developed, since our Stockholm seminar in 2019. Artificial Intelligence technologies, good metadata curation and data stewardship, coupled with cloud-based initiatives will be driving forces in our media workflows and will continue to shape the role of the documentalist/archivist in the future! We look forward to continuing the conversation in 2023.

Recordings from the 2022 sessions will be published later this month.

FOCAL International - Lifetime Achievement Awards

FIAT/IFTA is proud to share the news that Bríd Dooley will receive the FOCAL International - Lifetime Achievement Award.

"Bríd served two terms as General Secretary of FIAT/IFTA from 2006 - 2012, during which time she fostered stronger co-operation and dialogue within the CCAAA, Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archive Associations. She has been an active leader in devising the annual UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage and the early promoter of the Save Your Archive initiative of FIAT/IFTA founded in London in 2012, which has since gone on to support a wide range of projects for global endangered archives. From 2016-2020 she led the FIAT/IFTA as President focusing on revitalising the network and its mission as well as re-designing the annual FIAT/IFTA Awards to recognise and showcase the professionalism and expertise of audiovisual specialists, a highlight of its annual conferences."
