WATCH THE PMC SEMINAR RECORDING
On 21 June the FIAT/IFTA Preservation and Migration Commission presented a webinar on what to do with the large amounts of film in TV archives. Up to 30% of the material on shelves in TV archives was film, according to a 2002 study. The webinar explained how the various kinds of film got there in the first place, and then had case studies and practical examples of what to do with this film, to get it digitised and release its value.
There were case studies from Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and the United States. Particular topics discussed included assessing the overall collection, what to do about vinegar syndrome, film that is fragile or in poor condition, problems with tape splices, working in-house vs outsourcing, and how best to implement quality control.
The audience of 139 was truly international, representing every continent.
Their questions (about 20 in all) were answered live or in writing, on subjects ranging from “how do you know what’s in the cans” to rights issues and dealing with multiple copies.
We hope that the interest in this webinar, and the further audience for the online recording, will help broadcasters and archives around the world get their film off the shelves, digitised and made accessible.
