Hello <<First Name>>,
As we approach the end of Black History Month, I’d like to draw your attention to our Racial Equality Pledges which forcefully reject all forms of racism and discrimination, protect and promote equality and increase awareness of bias and injustice. We pledged a shared commitment to racial equality in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin a year ago and I would like to thank you all for your support. It’s important we create a culture of inclusiveness, which is why the Ethnically Diverse Network event that Alison Bussey mentioned in the last issue was a great chance to highlight and celebrate our dedicated and diverse workforce that we are so lucky to have.
Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin ICS launched a new preceptorship programme earlier this month, to support newly qualified nurses, Allied Health Professionals, and midwives in their early career journey. The programme's aims are to develop confidence and competence as independent professionals and refine their skills, values and behaviours. It was brilliant to hear how well the first event went, with attendees enjoying a range of workshops and personal development sessions. From a personal perspective, I absolutely recognise that the beginning of a newly qualified practitioner’s career can be tough at times and an individual’s initial experience can shape their development. This is why the preceptorship programme is essential.
As the delivery of the winter vaccination programme continues to progress, I want to take this opportunity to urge you all again- to spread the word to everyone in our system that all health and social care workers can come forward and top up their immunity this winter. As of 17 October, we have delivered over 110,000 vaccines in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, which is good, however, we need to do more collectively to increase uptake amongst staff. Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking flu is just a heavy cold or that COVID-19 has gone away, both are serious life-threatening diseases and cases are currently on the rise. I urge all staff to have your jabs as soon as possible, ahead of winter, to protect yourself, your family and the people we care for.
Tuesday 18th of October saw us celebrate Pharmacy Technician Day, which allowed us to recognise the invaluable contributions made by Pharmacy Technicians within Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. Working with our Medicines Management Team, the Pharmacy Technicians are integral to patient health and safety. A case study, which can be found here, highlights the role of one of our Pharmacy Technicians, Claire Joyce, and the vast array of work and support she offers to her local area.
As ever, we have some fantastic work going on across the patch that you will be able to read below. Both Telford & Wrekin Council and Shropshire Council have now launched initiatives to support people battling the cost-of-living crisis. Both councils have also launched a new online hub offering advice and support for those who need it.
I hope you enjoy this edition.
Best wishes,

Simon
