Join us in 2015

A critical year for First Peoples

Dear Supporter,

It's hard to believe that it's mid January 2015 already - we've got a lot to do and we've hit the ground running!

We've seen massive cuts to Aboriginal services, peak organisations and programs in 2014, and the impact of those cuts will start to bite this year.

That's why we're gearing up for a huge year of action and we hope that you'll join us in what will be a critical year for our First Peoples.

Here's a picture of what we've got planned.

In February, thanks to supporters like you, we'll be heading to Canberra to hold a landmark event in parliament with our campaign partners to remind our politicians that they must not walk away from commitments to Close the Gap.

A ten year life expectancy gap remains and much work is to be done to close this gap.

We will continue to fight the funding cuts to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health so that we don't go backwards on the start of progress we've seen in child mortality and life expectancy.

On National Close the Gap Day on 19 March we'll be holding the ANTaR National Close the Gap Day Picnic and working as part of the Campaign Coalition so we surpass the record 1300 community events involving over 150,000 supporters last year reminding the governments of Australia that this is an issue that matters to all Australians.

This year we'll also be working with our partners to launch a new national campaign to reduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander incarceration rates, which are 15 times higher than other Australians.

We'll call for targets for reducing incarceration, and call for the implementation of a new approach - justice reinvestment, an alternative to locking so many Aboriginal people up.

And we'll stand with our Aboriginal partner organisations that have been defunded and continue to fight the defunding of these vital organisations and services.

We'll work to get the foundations right as a nation. That's why we will continue to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partners towards a successful referendum recognising our First Australians and removing racism from the nation's founding document.

We'll be holding Rock for Recognition concerts to build the movement for recognition and will be launching Students for Recognition to build the movement on campuses across Australia.

We're gearing up for the government to push ahead with a range of draconian budget measures in May and we plan to stand alongside out Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partners to fight for fairness.

It's shaping up to be a massive year, but together I know that we can make a difference.

Happy new year and thanks for all you do for justice, rights and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people!

About our campaigns

Justice Campaign

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are imprisoned at a rate 14 times higher than other Australians. Aboriginal young people are 28 time more likely to be in juvenile detention.

ANTaR is campaigning for the adoption of Justice Targets and for the implementation of Justice Reinvestment in Australia.

Close the Gap

An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child born today will die on average a decade younger than other Australian children.

ANTaR campaigns along with Close the Gap partners to address this life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. We are working to close the gap by 2030.

Constitutional Recognition Campaign

ANTaR is campaigning to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian Constitution and remove racial sections from the nation's founding document.
We are calling for a clear pathway and process to a referendum that involves genuine consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
