Congratulations to...
* Tanzania 2015 on another great training camp, this time in Normandy (Surrey !) and complete with the water purifying device that they will take to the project campsite with them.

* To the Pro-Act hillwalking team led by Lynne & Adam French who last week delivered a magnificent 6 days of hillwalking in the Lake District, including several major peaks and a wild camp in the Langstrath, to 22 Scouts & Explorers. Next year's trip will also be during the Easter week - 26th March to 2nd April 2016.

Census Completion
Thank you to all Groups and Districts for completion of the Census on time, including getting cheques to FernyCrofts by 7th.   It adds up to a lot of money; County pays nearly ½ million to Scout HQ!  It’s worth special thanks because of the late reversion to the manual method that involved, at least, a shorter time frame to usual and, for some, re-entering data.  Thank you for your cooperation and, as usual, for maintaining good humour.  The difficulties are acknowledged.  Thanks

Media & PR Good practices (April 2015)
 
ADC Public Relations & Marketing - James Snape.
This role will liaise closely with the media to promote Scouting in Romsey and report on events and activities providing on brand publicity material for events and activities for both the District and Group teams to provide a consistency of quality branded material across the District. In Romsey this role also builds on James' role of leading their District Youth Council as in this role James will oversee their District Young Spokespeople team, working with them to facilitate training and ensure that they are the public face of Scouting in Romsey.
 
The County Media and PR team are available to support you with; Creating Effective Publicity, Training Young People and Adults and Encourage Appointments, such as the above. We also have a diary of workshops such as Adults Media and PR workshop (aim age 18+) and Scouts Speak Up workshop (aim age 13 to 18).

Hospital Scout Groups

Southampton is due to start on Wednesday 8th April. If you or any other member aged 18+ is interested in joining the hospital team, adults who have completed all the prescribed training and paperwork can join so the next training event is at Southampton General Hospital on Thursday 4th June 5pm to 8.30pm. If you wish to attend please contact Sara Sullivan tabby15th@icloud.com

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Next year, as I’m sure you know, is the 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award. Hampshire County is keen to celebrate this and will be holding various events to  celebrate  this landmark.
HCC are curating an exhibition to coincide with an event in January 2016 and am keen to borrow any heritage gear-tents, boots, maps, clothing, stoves etc.
If anyone had any items which could be lent, please can you email dofe@scouts-hants.org.uk - any items would be properly catalogued and cared for.

2015 LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT WEEKEND:
 
Following the previous highly successful Leadership & Management Weekends (since 2011 ) for newly appointed District Commissioners and Group Scout Leaders, we have scheduled the one for 2015 over the weekend of 21st/22nd  November 2015 at the Holiday Inn, Eastleigh.
 
This weekend is open to all DC’s/DDC’s and GSL’s who have been in post for up to 24 months.
 
More details will be issued over the coming weeks, but in the meantime, please notify your wish to attend to Donna Kerrigan, Director of Adult Learning on ctm@scouts-hants.org.uk quickly to save disappointment (previous weekends were oversubscribed!).
 
 

UPDATE on Wood Badges
 
Many thanks to those LTMs who have sent me Wood badge recommendation forms.
 
Wood Badge recommendation forms can be sent into GIlwell by the CTM. These will be processed and added to Compass for us. 
All Wood Badges that have been completed but not dispatched over recent months will be sent  over the next couple of weeks to me.  Gilwell  will deliver a Wood Badge for anyone in Hampshire that Compass currently says requires one. As this information may be out of date or recorded in error a while back on Compass,  Gilwell will send the wood badge to me as the first recipient on these Wood Badges so they can be  checked.  I will then pass them  onto the local District Commissioner to be presented. I promise to do this speedily. There is currently a back log from September 2014.

 
Creative Activities
 
Well done to 14th Eastleigh 'Spitfires' Scout and Guide Band on their Band Camp, with loads of musicality mixed in with camping, marching, late night hikes, concerts and not to mention human pyramids….. What more could you need!?!? Check out their website for what they've been up to and what they have planned for the year ahead - it looks busy!
 
This week brings us no less than 3 Scout Show's in our very own County, make sure you have a ticket for at least one of these and get supporting the creative side of Scouting.

Southampton Orienteering Club Events

Southampton Orienteering Club regularly holds events suitable for all abilities in the South Hampshire area, with course suitable for novices up to more technical courses for those looking for more of a challenge. The summer series, details of which can be found by following this link, could be of particular interest, with events being held on Saturday mornings. Orienteering is a good way to practice map reading skills on maps specifically drawn for orienteering. Tuition is available. Old Canvas Needed
I am a production manager for the Brownsea Open Air Theatre (BOAT).
We stage a Shakespeare play on Brownsea Island every summer. This year we are putting on The Tempest and it will be our 52nd year.
 
We are in need of old canvas to make sails for the set.
We wondered if Hampshire scouts might have old marquees or tents that have reached the end of their lives which you would consider donating to us.
We need about 50 square metres and specifically require canvas in lighter colours.
It does not have to be all the same as we will be making up a number of sails and the material can be different for each sail
 
I would be pleased to hear from anyone who thinks they may have something suitable.
And we are happy to collect.
 
We meet many Scout troops on the island when we are building the new set each year ,which takes from May to July.
Members come over to see what we are doing and it is a pleasure to tell them what we are up to.
