NYC Irish Studies Consortium Newsletter

Hello, everyone,

We hope that you have had a healthy, productive, and pleasant September so far. Here are a few interesting Irish Studies events this month that we would like to share with you all.

On Monday, September 13th, at 7:00pm ET, the John Walsh Chapter of the Irish American Cultural Institute will live-stream author and historian Dr. Helene O’Keeffe’s presentation “Mapping the Burning of Cork.” In this presentation, streamed live from Ireland, Dr. O’Keeffe (University College Cork, School of History) will analyze detailed maps and witness accounts of the devastating events that took place on the night of December 11-12, 1920 during the Irish War of Independence. Tickets are free for IACI members and $10 for non-member guests. Please find tickets for the event at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mapping-the-burning-of-cork-tickets-166386373121?fbclid=IwAR3WS8kRvW1IqOuYpJB1Z5ZkxAl-5hHQt4nMSvZH2eKkiXwEUMdeeEI9Ofo

Later on in the month, please join NYU’s Glucksman Ireland House for its Annual Ernie O’Malley Lecture. This year’s lecture, “Soft Power in the Transatlantic Diplomatic Relationship during the 1930s,” will be given by historian of diplomacy and Professor Emerita Dr. Bernadette Whelan, MRIA. Drawing from her most recent book, De Valera and Roosevelt: Irish and American Diplomacy in Times of Crisis, 1932-1939 (Cambridge University Press, 2020), Dr. Whelan will discuss how soft power has been an integral part—and perhaps, the most successful part—of American and Irish diplomatic relations, and how it operated in de Valera’s Ireland and Roosevelt’s America during the 1930s. The event will take place over Zoom from 5:00-6:15pm ET on Thursday, September 30th. Please register for the event at https://nyu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUrdemuqTssG9Nha6xxvINvcQB9fu05Cvtv.
