Introducing Amy Guthrie: Study Abroad Information Specialist

Please join us in welcoming our newest staff member to campus! Amy Guthrie, pictured above, took on a new position in the Office of Education Abroad, the Study Abroad Information Specialist, in January of this year and has become an integral part of the study abroad team already. Amy came to CWRU from Buffalo, New York where she completed her master’s degree in higher education administration at the State University of New York (SUNY). While completing her masters, Amy worked in the Offices of Institutional Analysis and Study Abroad at SUNY, and interned for a summer in the International Student Office at D’Youville College.

Amy’s experience with international education began when she spent a year studying abroad in Manchester, England during her undergraduate career. During her study abroad, Amy had the opportunity to backpack Eastern Europe and North Africa, exploring over twenty different countries. Through all of her travels then and now, Amy is proud to say she has never turned down any food offered to her!

Today, Amy is excited to combine her love of international education and data analysis skills as CWRU’s new Study Abroad Information Specialist. She is happy to help students, staff, and faculty with the online application system and more.

We are excited to welcome Amy to the Center for International Affairs team!

Study Health, Human, and Social Development in Ecuador!

Join Mandel School faculty for a CWRU three-credit hour experiential course this winter break in Ecuador! Experience the capital city, Quito, spend time in the Amazon rain forest, live with Quichua indigenous family for 2 nights, and spend a day with the Afro-indigenous community!

This course provides an integrated approach to the study of the multicultural issues related to policies and services that center around human and community development in Ecuador.  There will be visits to urban and rural Ecuador that expose you to basic knowledge of the country’s history, politics, economic system, delivery of social and health services, and the unique diversity of Ecuadorian citizens.   You will have site visits that include programs in in health, HIV/AIDS, education, child welfare, disaster interventions, trafficking in human persons, and U.S. Aid policy.  Other experiences include shopping at a traditional open air market in Otavalo, the largest in South America, a visit to the equator, cultural museums, ziplining, and hiking volcanoes and mountains. You will
also have free time in Quito to explore on your own.  A unique way of understanding the cultural diversity and home life will be through home stays in small groups with Quichua indigenous families, which is a unique experience in Latin America and a highlight for students. You will stay within an indigenous community. A second experience with an Afro-indigenous group north of Quito will also be planned.

Another highlight of this trip is an excursion to Amazon rainforest where we explore a different Ecuadorian lifestyle influenced by the native people, flora and fauna and medical practices. We will hike, visit the Amazon, take a canoe ride down an Amazon tributary called the Napo River, interface with a native healer, and participate in a service project.
