School of Law: Educating Rwandan Judges on International Commercial Law

In conjunction with the International Law Institute-African Center for Legal Excellence (ILI-ACLE), the School of Law was recently awarded a grant to offer an Advanced Professional Certificate in International Commercial Law to Rwandan judges and senior Rwandan officials. CWRU law faculty will teach courses in international trade and economic law, international business transactions, and international communication and innovation law. The courses will involve a hybrid method of delivery.  School of Law faculty will teach the initial sessions from Cleveland using CWRU’s state-of-the-art video conference facilities.  Law faculty will then travel to Rwanda to teach the final sessions and work in person with Rwandan judges and senior officials.

The Advanced Professional Certificate is a first result of a 2013 Memorandum of Understanding signed by Case Western Reserve University and  ILI—ACLE, under which the two institution agreed to work together on joint educational projects, specifically concentrating  on sub-Saharan Africa. ILI-ACLE is co-founded and directed by a CWRU alumnus, Swithin Munyantwali, and is based Kampala, Uganda.

This work by the School of Law is one part of a long-term and meaningful CWRU relationship with Uganda which includes disciplines from across campus.

Center for International Affairs: Annual Report 2013

The Center for International Affairs is the first university-wide international office established at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and is a direct result of internationalization as a focus of the strategic plan.  Since opening in 2011 the Center has set key goals through our Plan for Internalization and has made significant progress in supporting and promoting an inclusive culture of global citizenship.

International efforts are not new to CWRU and the Center for International Affairs has the pleasure of working with each department and school to interlink the internationalization that is taking place on campus into a collaborative university-wide strategy.  Accordingly, we have prepared our first annual report recognizing and celebrating numerous international highlights of CWRU faculty, students, and staff for 2013.  The report represents a dedicated and long-term institutional and multi-disciplinary approach, bringing together various perspectives and areas of knowledge, and exemplifying what internationalization at CWRU is all about.

We invite you to review our internationalization efforts and join with us as We Bridge CWRU and the World.
