@ The Denver Ukefest
Here's a writeup of my experience I recently posted on Facebook:
Got up at 4am Saturday to carpool with Ed Marshall and Sam Austin Morrow to the airport, with drama over Matt Tecu missing the flight. Patrick Hildebrand Jr. and the band led a workshop in the afternoon teaching people all the ukulele parts that The Ooks came up with for the song "Kids", and it was really interesting to hear how the song is broken down and what goes into the wall of ukulele sound. There was hanging out in the green room with Rick Torres making silly videos of Charlie Diaz and me and chilling at the hotel where the 7 of us shared 2 hotel rooms. Then there was the show, where we were the headliners, and basically The Ooks are considered gods at the Ukefest. And rightly so, I would add. I am so grateful to play with such talented and fun musicians. They're a funny, cantankerous crew, with debates over how to play each song, and pranking each other with mashup photos, and "Shut your mouth!", but all with love for the music and each other. I'm the pirate girl in the band, who's "almost" one of the boys. And with the love that was pouring out from the Ukefest audience, with cheers and standing ovations for every song, we played strong! Hope Dunbar, Emily Hinton Dunbar and Jessica Luebbe of Star Belle also came up to sing harmonies on "Smile" and we played all played one of their songs too. Then we invited the people who had been in the afternoon workshop to come up on stage and play "Kids" with the band, which was just so awesome. Flew back early the next morning after 24 hours of running on adrenaline.
