"Seventy-five Years of Air Power."

The Air Force Thunderbirds will once again fly at the Luke Air Force Base Air Show on April 2nd and 3rd as the base celebrates their 75th year of operations. The biennial show also will mark a homecoming for the Thunderbirds, activated at Luke in 1953 before being moved. The show will also feature ground displays of the new stealth F-35 Lightening II and the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Please know that when we offer tickets to concerts and sporting events through our box seats at the Talking Stick Resort Arena, the firm in no way endorses the event taking place. These are simply offers to our clients to make use of our facilities at events scheduled by the Talking Stick Resort Arena. In order to make winning tickets as fair as possible for everyone, we limit winners to one event per year.

Please check out Lat Celmin’s article this month on starting a new business. The subject will remain his focus in the coming year with an element about starting a new business covered in his monthly blogs, starting on March 29th. As you can see from the colorful photos below, Michael Margrave has been traveling again, this time in Canada where he visited the Winnipeg Ice Show. There’s also a photo of Rick DePonte with other Gift of Life Board members, and a news item about one of Laura Trujillo’s recent presentations.

Meanwhile, enjoy our latest newsletter, and let’s hope Spring hangs on for at least another month before it warms up too much.

Attorney Spotlight
Michael Margrave recently joined the annual Canadian Moonlighters train trip. Canadian Moonlighters are mostly composed of former and current railroad employees, plus some enthusiasts like Michael. The group is called the “Moonlighters” because they schedule trips during a full moon cycle in February on a trip from Vancouver to Toronto so they have the full benefit of a bright moon for night viewing in the dome cars included in the train.

This year the group scheduled a return trip back to Vancouver, with about ten people traveling both ways, the first time they have done a round trip. During a stopover in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Michael visited the first ever Winnipeg Ice Show. The winter festival included dinosaurs and bears made of snow, many ice sculptures and more. Michael found time to take a few photos for us of an ice bar near an igloo. “Seating in the ice bar was cold—about five below zero,” he said.

Laura Trujillo recently presented at a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar provided by the National Business Institute. The presentation focused on the ethical dilemmas of estate planning attorneys. Part of the presentation focused on protecting the attorney-client privilege in the digital age, including the removal of meta data before disclosing electronic files to outside third parties.

So You Want to Start a Business

Part I. Introduction

I have been a business attorney for more than 40 years representing many small companies. The businesses ranged from brick and mortar companies, service companies, marketing companies, real estate companies to cyber and internet companies. I am often asked the question, how do I go about starting a new business. In my view, there are ten essential elements to a possible successful and hopefully profitable business. I will address each of these elements in a series of blogs over the coming months, starting March 29th. These essential elements are generally in the following order and importance:
  1. Passion about an idea. First and foremost, you must have a great passion about an idea.
  2. Branding. You must immediately start branding of the product or service.
  3. Control. You must have full control of the enterprise at the outset so that your idea is not diluted and can be carried out as you visualize it.
  4. Choice of business entity. There are many business forms that your new enterprise can take, however, the business form of choice is either a limited liability company or a corporation.
  5. Resources and capital. You must have enough resources and capital to get the enterprise started.
  6. Management controls. Early on, you must consider management and financial controls so that the production of a product or providing a service can be monitored.
  7. Sales and marketing. Sales and marketing in the information world starts out with personal contacts, personal networking and then transforms into a webpage and internet marketing.
  8. Trusted financial and legal advisors. The financial and legal advisors provide direction and boundaries to a business.
  9. Profitability of the business. The business must have some prospect for near-term and long-term viability and profitability.
  10. Profiting from your business. How do you profit from your business strategy?

  11. Over the next coming months I will be discussing these topics in separate blogs
