Get Ready for Valentine’s Day!

What in the world is Kendra talking about?
Doesn't she know Valentines Day has come and gone?

Yes, I do know, and I hope yours was a happy one.  So, guess what - it’s time to work on next year’s Valentines Day!  I’m not suggesting that you start shopping early for cards and gifts!  Instead, that you start – right now – enhancing your relationship with special people in your life.  Remember those days in elementary school, when you sent Valentines to your favorite friends and even your teacher?  I’m talking about those kinds of special people who are in your life right now.

Judging from the anxiety I see in my private practice, I believe we are all busier than we’ve ever been, and when we’re busy, it’s easy to take things (and special people) for granted!  However, relationships – even long established comfortable ones – need time and attention.  How much time do you set aside regularly for special people in your life?

I’m recommending “Valentine Events” scattered all through the year – special time with those who matter to you.  These events don’t need to be expensive and they don’t even have to take a lot of time:  meeting a friend for breakfast, taking flowers to a relative, sharing ice cream with grandkids!  What is required for a Valentine Event is simply dedicated time, away from television, cell phones, or discussions about problems. Your presence is the present that is necessary.

When we take special people for granted all year, Valentines Day could be just another chore.  Valentine Events can bring joy all through the year to those special people – and to us, as well.

Speaking of wonderful gifts – I urge you to read a wonderful interview with Michael J. Fox in Good Housekeeping Magazine, October 2013.  I cried as I put it down…………….not that it was so sad…..because it wasn't………….it was so inspiring.  I hope it will be meaningful for you, as well.  Here are two quotes and a link to the full article:

’No Complaints, No Excuses” – an interview with Michael J. Fox.

He said:

"Never give up. Look at the choices you have, not the choices that have been taken away from you.  In them, there are whole worlds of strength and new ways to look at things.”

And he said that he lives by a saying (unknown source)

“My happiness grows in direct proportion to my acceptance and in inverse proportion to my expectations.”

Good communication is the key to any successful relationship.

What if you were not speaking the same language and didn't even know it?

Movie Suggestions from Terry :

Romantic comedies or “chic flicks” are not the major movie genre at our house, but here are two  quotes from movies that I think speak volumes about love:

Les Miserables

“To love another person is to see the face of God.”
Victor Hugo
Moonstruck

“ I love you. Not, not like they told you love is and I didn't know this either. But love don't make things nice, it ruins everything! It breaks your heart, it makes things a mess. We, we aren't here to make things perfect. Snowflakes are perfect, stars are perfect. Not us! Not US! We are here to ruin ourselves and, and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and, and die! I mean that the storybooks are b*s*.”
