Youth Roundtable on Refugee and Asylum Seeker Policy
(May 29, Canberra)
We believe it is critical for young peoples’ voices to be heard, especially on controversial and complex topic areas that affect their future and that of their country
Why are we holding this event? This roundtable will provide an opportunity for young people (18-30 years old) to freely voice their perspectives, ideas and visions relating to the future of Refugee and Asylum Seeker Policy in Australia. We recognise that young people can offer fresh thinking and innovative solutions that are valuable contributions to the policy making process. This event is an initiative of Young Australia21 (YA21) with support from Australia21.
What will young people get out of it? Participants will engage in interactive dialogue and activities with their peers and invited experts to consider future Refugee and Asylum Seeker Policy in Australia.
Australia21 will be involved in synthesising youth perspectives from the roundtable into a short summary to feed into an expert roundtable to be held by Australia21 in July.
Who can participate? We are putting out a call for a range of youth participants (aged 18-30) from the community, including people of refugee or asylum seeker background, service providers, students, public servants, academics and members of the general community in the Canberra area. Participants from other regions are welcome to submit an expression of interest as well, though will need to cover their own travel and accommodation. We will also have an online discussion board that will allow participants from other areas to participate in discussion before the event.
When and where is the event? The roundtable will be held at 6pm-9pm on the 29 May at ANU in Canberra.
