Refugee and Asylum Seeker Policy:

After the rallies, what next?

Rallies like this may preach to the converted but they do strengthen resolve and give voice to those who would like to see a better way. Among the Canberra crowd at least an atmosphere of disbelief and sadness, rather than anger, seemed to prevail and the message was
“Australia, surely we can do better than this”.

Australia21 on refugee and asylum seeker policy

Over the last year or so Australia21 has worked hard both alone and with partners to articulate what "better than this" might look like. Here are some links:  What you can do

Host a conversation - Coming soon
We want to stimulate more thoughtful community conversations on refugee and asylum seeker policy in Australia. so we developed a new conversation pack on this topic. To test it we are seeking volunteer hosts who will be asked to convene a small group of friends, neighbours or colleagues, and to hold a conversation using the guidance in the pack which include some background material and questions for consideration.

This approach is based on the Kitchen Table Conversation method initiated by the Victorian Women's Trust, and we will also provide guidance on how to conduct the conversation. You will be asked to nominate a volunteer scribe for the event, to provide a brief report on the content of the conversation and to complete a short  evaluation survey. More detail will be provided soon. If you would like to  express interest in hosting a conversation or to know more, please email us at or phone on 02 6288 0823.

Australia21 is a small not for profit organisation which seeks to create new frameworks of understanding about the strategic issues facing us in the 21st century.
