Please welcome Akel! 🎉

Hi there,

For the past months, we were on the lookout for a technical lead, someone with strong technical skills, passionate about journalism innovation, and a good fit for the team. After various

Akel has been involved with media and journalism projects in his homeland, Chile, and the U.S. He worked for Ciper Chile (Chilean investigative journalism non-profit), developing its own custom CRM that allowed Ciper to manage its subscriber base and monthly subscription payments. He has also worked with Documented NY (a New York immigration non-profit news outlet) developing a WordPress template and its plugins, and leading the Front-end operations on their project "Wage Theft".

Akel has worked with NYC_Prensa (Chile's first Twitter-first media outlet, with a large audience of 20 million impressions monthly), where he developed a bot to promote and inform about the referendum on the new constitution which will be voted on September 4th in Chile.

Akel sees himself involved with the news industry because “journalism gives him ways to make an impact in society while sitting behind a screen with his favorite tools.”

We asked Akel some questions

What do you like about Qurio's in general?

Definitely, I would say "a more democratic society" vision is one of the top things I immediately got hooked on when I was getting to know about this project. To me (especially in the tech world) "Democracy" means a place where every one of us can get access to very well thought tools available for a fair price, and I have a strong belief technology must go in that direction. Helping people to get access means making space for more opportunities.

And what about the product?

My favorite thing about this product is the result of many many hours spent thinking and rethinking ideas, workflows, processes, details, doing research, attending conferences, bringing almost every day new perspectives from different actors, interviewing people, etc. All this translates into a really well-thought product from many perspectives: user-friendly, cost-effective, easy to manage, good-looking, and much more. We are developing a product with data and help from so many sources that I feel proud to be part of this, and I know we are not inventing the wheel, but damn you will feel this wheel like no other.

What do you expect from your work with Qurio?

As a team member, my main goals are to challenge my team, help them and contribute to making this happen in the same way Donatello from teenage ninja mutant turtles fights with his team inventing gadgets and vehicles. I expect no less than to develop a solid, scalable, reliable, and trustworthy platform where our future customers will make their dreams come true.

World Press Trends preview by WAN-IFRA
With inflation rising, possible recessions looming and the ongoing war in the Ukraine, the short-term business sentiment in the news publishing industry has taken a downturn, according to the first results of WAN-IFRA’s global industry survey. That said, publishers have managed to adapt and innovate during the pandemic and those efforts will pay off in 2022 with markedly increased total revenue – critically, developing new revenue streams.
