Science Zone
by Glen Wahlman, GSAA Science Teacher
Biology 1 is finishing up its unit on biochemistry.  These week they have been using various tests to check foods for simple sugars, starches, fats, and proteins.  The test for simple sugars involve Benedict's solution and heat.  If the sample stays blue then it has no simple sugars.   A positive test is bright orange which indicates the presence of simple sugars.
Thanks to generous donations the science department continues to add needed equipment to upgrade the teaching materials.  With funds, the purchase of a cat anatomy model and a cat skeleton have added to the visual aids for Biology 2.

Friendly reminder that next week is spirit week!  The days are as follows:

It is important to note that for all of these days you should observe the school dress code as well as use common sense.  The only exceptions to the dress code are:

  1. You are allowed to color your hair for character day. (Not permanent)
  2. You are allowed to wear appropriate face paint for school spirit day.
  3.  Athletic wear, sweatpants, and pajamas are allowed on comfortable day.  Again, nothing skimpy and no leggings!

Be mindful on character day that you dress as a school appropriate character, if there is any doubt whether or not it is appropriate, ask a teacher or just don't wear it.  Remember that a teacher can ask you to change whenever he or she feels like you are breaking dress code.  It is your responsibility to have clothes to change into if that happens.

All that being said, let's make next week an fun week!  It would be awesome if we had full participation on every day!
Monday - Twin and Character day.
Dress up as your favorite movie, comic, book, or any other character!  You may also choose to twin with a fellow student or staff member by dressing similar to them.
Tuesday - Blue out/School Spirit day.
Wear all your Gem State attire (example: academy days t-shirts) or anything blue!
Wednesday - Geek or Sleek.
Simple, dress as a nerd or in fancy/formal attire.

Thursday - Ugly Sweater Day
Wear your ugly Christmas sweater!
Friday - Comfortable day
Wear sweat pants, joggers, athletic shorts, or pajamas!  Reminder, do not wear anything skimpy and leggings will not be allowed.

Dear Parents

Inclement weather is certain to occur before long...maybe even tomorrow.  Weather in this valley can vary dramatically.  Tonight Caldwell is calling for rain while Boise might get a mixture of rain and snow.  If you as a parent determines that the weather in your area is unsafe for travel, I encourage you to choose caution over attendance.  It is difficult for us to determine all of the driving conditions in your areas so there may be days that GSAA does not change its schedule on account of the weather, but you deem it unsafe to transport your student to school.  We will support such choices.  Also, please notify us that they are staying with you so that we will not be wondering if your student is somewhere stuck by the side of the road.

Inclement Weather Policy
Gem State Adventist Academy will follow Vallivue School district inclement weather school closures, unless advanced notice is communicated with parents to do otherwise.  We will attempt to give advanced notice via email and phone.
Since weather in this valley can vary dramatically, it is difficult to determine all the driving conditions in your areas.  There may be days that GSAA does not close on account of the weather, but you deem it unsafe to transport your student to school.  We encourage and support your decision to keep your student safely home.  If you choose to keep your student home, please notify us so that we know not to be expecting them.

Senior Project Need for Lights
by Jacob Healy, Senior of 2019
This Christmas season I have decided, along with Mr. Waterhouse and my senior mentor, Mr. Kluchesky, to light up Gem State with Christmas lights. Not only am I doing this for my senior project but also to bring cheer to this wonderful school and the people surrounding us. However, I have only been able to put lights on four trees. I would love to add many more lights to our beautiful campus and in order to do so I need your help. In order to continue decorating, I need more Christmas lights. Here is the list:
  • No incandescent Christmas lights, only LED.
  • At least 10 strands of LED multi-color net. Christmas lights of 150 lights or more.
  • At least 2 strands of 100 or more white LED Christmas lights.
  • Two strands of 100 c7 LED multi-color Christmas lights with light stakes.
  • Any other LED lights would be much appreciated as well.
Thank you for all your help and support of Gem State!
