IN BLOOM: FRESH FRUITS AND VEGGIES

Local food to local communities – Enough Pie and GrowFood Carolina working together

As we all know, these are difficult and unusual times. Many of our neighbors right here in Charleston are going hungry, while many South Carolina farmers are having trouble getting their harvest to market.

Enough Pie has teamed up with GrowFood Carolina to bring food from local farmers to people experiencing food insecurity in the Upper Peninsula. GrowFood is Charleston’s local food hub. Created by the Coastal Conservation League, GrowFood helps small farmers stay on their land by connecting them to local markets. In the current health and economic crisis, getting food to people who urgently need it is more important than ever.

Launching on Monday, May 18th, Enough Pie, working closely with long-time Rosemount resident Ms. Andrea Chilsom and her team of neighborhood volunteers, distributed our first shipment of 75 boxes, filled
with fresh, nutritious produce from GrowFood under the US Department of Agriculture’s Farmers to Families program. Each box had a mix of local fruits and veggies, along with an information sheet about the produce and helpful recipes. While honoring physical distancing, we supplied food to appreciative families at the Freddy Whaley Community Center in the historic community of Rosemount in the Upper Peninsula. Looking ahead, Enough Pie is excited to also partner with ART & REMEDIES WELLNESS, who will sample the produce in creative and unique ways during future distributions. Next up is this Friday, May 22 at Bridgeview Village.

This is just the start of our partnership with GrowFood. EP will be working with them to continue to get more fresh, nutritious food to many more families in the Upper Peninsula in the weeks ahead. In times like these, we all need to do what we can to take care of our neighbors. We’re proud to be a part of bringing local food from local farmers to local communities. If you have a suggestion for distribution or live in the Upper Peninsula and need food support yourself, please contact us and we can help arrange a box for you!
UPDATES TO OUR BUTTERFLY BOOK NOOK

We are happy to have our Butterfly Book Nook looking fresh and ready for the summer! Our EP Artist in Residence, Trina Lyn, worked in the garden last week repainting the roof of our Free Little Library (newly restocked -- thanks, Pat!) and creating a new and lively panel for our welcome sign. The panel describes the various activities we hope to encourage in the garden, "Sing! Talk! Write! Read! Play!"

Be sure to stop by to pick up a good book and see the colorful art in person!
Thank you, Trina, for your beautiful work!
MEET MORE MAGICAL ENOUGH PIE MASK MAKERS!
Meet Brenda & Marci, two wonderful mask makers with Enough Pie who contributed to our 1,000 Masks by May Day initiative. This was Brenda's first time on the sewing machine! Marci isn't new to sewing, but was excited to get involved in an opportunity to serve her community. Thank you, Ladies!
JOIN OUR EFFORTS: FRIENDS OF JFM

Earlier this week, the Post & Courier wrote that after sharing their initial article about the challenging living conditions at Joseph Floyd Manor, several Charleston lawmakers and officials toured the building and made some promising declarations and decisions about improvement.

If you want to get involved in these efforts, EP, along with our friends at BoomTown ROI and more, are organizing a weekly ZOOM call on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00 PM for those who care and are willing to work on short and long term solutions for better living conditions for the residents of Joseph Floyd Manor. We encourage you to join as you can and share the details with anyone you know who is interested -- there is no commitment necessary. The call information is below:

We are very grateful for the quick response by so many concerned Charleston officials and neighbors and remain hopeful (and hands-on) to support a livable future for Joseph Floyd Manor!

WE CANNOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT -- PLEASE GIVE. THANKS SO MUCH!!
