February 2015

This week, we are set to begin a project that will make an enormous impact on the public face of our institution: the overhaul of our building’s lobby. Once the work is completed, the lobby will be transformed into a warm, comfortable and inviting setting for students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as for the tens of thousands of patients who receive care at the University Eye Center each year.

As I mentioned in my state of the College address to our community last week, we have made some significant upgrades and improvements to our campus over the past few years. From the creation of our wonderful Center for Student Life and Learning, to the state-of-the-art classrooms that were gut-renovated last summer, enhancements to our campus environment have been a major priority for us and they stand to make a lasting and positive impact on our community for years to come. These improvements extend well beyond the visible as we have also nearly completed a major renovation of our building’s electrical system.  And, we can't forget the major technological upgrade that our new electronic health records system will bring to the University Eye Center in the coming months.

These improvements are revitalizing and they play a critical role in helping us excel at achieving our mission. Perhaps most importantly, however, is how these improvements will help to secure our future. Making thoughtful, practical improvements today is imperative for our success down the road and none of this would be possible without the financial means that we enjoy as a result of the good fiscal stewardship that we have been able to maintain. Thanks to a lot of hard work by many, we have weathered the financial storm of the past several years and our fund balances are healthy.   With the foundation that we have formed, the College of Optometry is well positioned to invest in its strategic priorities, innovating and expanding educational, research and vision care programs.

I hope you will enjoy as much as I will being able to see the next phase of our facilities master plan come to fruition and experiencing the positive effect this will have on our community.
